Manhattan - Christmas 2000
Boots, Fred the Ted, and William
![]() Boots lives with Kathy and stayed behind in their apartment at Christmas to report on my wild Manhattan parties. We got on very well and I appreciated his company during my stay in New York. |

The last of his kind in the store bearing his name, Fred, is glad to be in Edinburgh and is a founding member of the Edinburgh New York Society. Fred went on an extended holiday after I returned home and he didn't arrive in Edinburgh until three days after me. We thank Air India for his brief visit to Bombay.

In the 1930s an English family returned home with a postcard of this exhibit from The Metropolitan Museum. The family named the hippo 'William' and often referred to him any family disputes. The family wrote with grateful thanks to the Met and explained William's importance to their family in maintaining domestic harmony. The Met so enjoyed the story that William's image was adopted as a museum icon.
