Manhattan - Christmas 2000
The Apartment
The apartment block on 82nd Street |
I arrived in Kathy's apartment on the evening of Saturday, 23 December 2000. Carping the diem we headed out on the town immediately and so began my introduction to the streets of Manhattan. Past steaming manhole covers we hastened along Lexington Avenue to 86th Street and descended to the city's subway system. My first experience of Grand Central and Times Square was beneath those attractions and we soon emerged to walk a short distance to the Bubbles Lounge, a champagne bar at 228 West Broadway. After a relaxing dinner in La Nonna we took a bus up Madison Avenue to home. |

The picture on the right was taken during the snow storm that deposited 14 inches of snow on the city during a few hours early in the morning of Saturday, 30 December. The snow was powder-soft and flurries continued until well into the afternoon. Flashes of lightning and peals of thunder occurred throughout the storm. Stories of Capt Scott and brave Mr Oates occupied my mind as I struggled through the snow to join the tourists in Macy's that morning.
