1820 Federal Census, Candlers of Campbell County, VA ~ Commentary ©1999 compiled by Ed Marsh
ALERT: There is a fact about the use of the terms "Jr." - junior, and "Sr." - senior that one must understand in order to make sense of the Candlers listed on the 1820 Federal census for Campbell County, VA.
In the Old-Style Usage (1700's-early 1800's), these terms did not mean father and son. They meant only: two people with the same first and last name (who lived near enough to be confused with the other). In this census, there are two Daniel Candlers who are first cousins and neither is the son of a "Daniel." There is also a James, Jr & James, Sr. who are not father and son. William A. is the son of William even though he is not called, Jr.
Even worse, James Candler, Sr. did have a son named James (James D. Candler, 1794-after 1857) who was not listed on the 1820 census. Daniel Candler, Jr. (1788-1860) had a son who became known as Daniel Candler, Jr. also. In other words, it's really confusing!

NOTE: These headings were difficult to understand on the transcription because there were no rows or dividing lines. I did my best! Also, there were many more lines for listing slaves and free black persons in various age categories. Since no Candler is shown as a slave-owner, I have omitted those lines to make it easier to read.
