By 1750, Daniel Candler and family were living at South River Settlement - present-day Lynchburg, VA

In the 1750's, William and Elloner Candler received Quaker certificates to travel to Cane Creek and New Garden, NC - Quaker communities

Circa 1775, John Candler's son, Daniel (c1753-1810) moved to the Monocacy area - present-day Frederick, MD

In the 1790's John Candler's son, Henry (1769-1806), was on tax roles in Wilkes County, NC

By the late 1790's, John Candler's son, John (1765-1832), was located in present-day Russell County, VA

By 1800, Zedikiah Candler's (c1745-c1825) son, Zachariah (c1772-1845) was located in present-day Buncombe County, NC

John Wesley Candler (1826-1915), son of Thomas Jefferson Candler (1801-1830) of Russell County, located in present-day Wirt County, WV

Zachariah Moorman Candler was stationed at Fort Hamilton, Ohio Territory in 1792. He was in the Bedford County, VA militia.

Zachariah Candler married Rhoda Pelham in April 1793 in present-day Green County, KY.

In 1779, John Donelson's expedition settled Nahville, Davidson County, TN. Elizabeth (Candler) Caffery's son, John (1756-1811), was along on the trip. After the War for Independence, he settled here.

John Donelson grew the first tobacco here in the 1780's. Zedikiah Candler and his son, John (c1775-c1835) located in Smith and Wilson County, TN in the first decade of the 1800's.

About 1767-69, William Candler (1736-1784) relocated from VA to Richmond County, GA. He may have come ahead of the Quaker settlers who came from Cane Creek Meeting in, NC. He was soon thereafter the Deputy Surveyor and militia officer.

Many Quakers from Lynchburg relocated in Harrison County & Highland, Ohio. Mildred Candler (1791-1846) died here while visiting (perhaps to witness her son's, William Buford Candler's, marriage to Susannah Johnson). Wm. and Susannah returned to Lynchburg.

John Candler (1782-1835) moved to Hardin County, Ohio sometime after 1820.

 

Daniel (c1700-1765) & Hannah Candler (no dates) raised their family at South River Settlement (#1), present-day Lynchburg, Campbell County in central Virginia.

Children of Daniel and Hannah:

John (c1730-1802) married Elizabeth Gibson, c1750, and they remained at Lynchburg (#1).

William (1736-1784) married Elizabeth Anthony, 1761, and moved to Cane Creek, NC area (#2), then on to Richmond County, GA (#12).

Zedikiah (c1745-after 1820) married Anna Moorman, 1772. They lived in Bedford County, VA (#1). Zed moved to Smith County, TN (#11) sometime after Anna's death in 1805.

Elizabeth [Caffery] (c1733-after 1791) remained at Lynchburg (#1). Her son, Capt. John Caffery lived on Candler's Mountain (#1) until after the Revolution. However, before the war, he went to TN with John Donelson (his father-in-law) on Donelson's Expedition to found Nashville (#10). The Caffery eventually moved to Natchez, MS where Capt. Caffery was an agent of Andrew Jackson (his brother-in-law). Link to Andrew & Rachel (Donelson) Jackson

Elloner [Ballard] (c1739-1790) married Byrom Ballard, 1763, at South River MH (#1). The Ballards moved to Louisa County during the Revolution, but returned to South River afterwards. Elloner died at Lynchburg.

Grandchildren of Daniel and Hannah:

John's sons, William (1751-1836), and James (c1756-1826) remain at Lynchburg.

John's son, Daniel (c1753-1810) moved to Montgomery County, MD (#3) in the late 1770's and died there.

John's son, John, Jr. (1765-1832) moved to Russell County, VA (#5) in the 1790's.

John's son, Henry Candler (1769-1806) was in Wilkes County, NC (#4) for the 1793 Tax records, but died in Campbell County (#1).

John's daughter, Jane Candler [Guthrie] (c1758-1807), married, had children, and died at Lynchburg. Her husband, James Guthrie, subsequently moved to Highland County, OH (#13).

John's grandson, John Candler (1782-1835), son of William Candler (1751-1836) & Agnes Guthrie (sister of James above) moved to Hardin County, Ohio (#14) after 1820.

John's daughter, Hannah Candler [Irby] (c1760-????) was married in the Lynchburg area. She and husband Douglass Irby moved to Botetourt County, VA which is just east of Bedford County. Douglas died in 1843 in Roanoke County, VA (separated later from Botetourt County). According to LDS files (the Mormons), they had three daughters.

William's and Elizabeth's children grew to adulthood in GA (#12) and are not within the scope of this study.

Zedikiah's son, Zachariah Moorman Candler (c1773-1844) married: Rachel Thornhill in Bedford County, VA in 1791 (#1); Rhoda Pelham in Green County, KY in 1793 (#9); and a third time (probably c1800) to Mary "Polly" Boon with whom he settled in Buncombe County, NC (#6) and raised a family.

Zedikiah's son John (c1775- after 1830) was in Wilson County, TN (#11) by 1814. Wilson is just west of Smith County where a Zedekiah Candler appears on the 1820 census of the US.

Zedikiah's daughter, Elizabeth, married Thomas Robertson in Bedford County in 1790.

Zedikiah's daughter, Nancy, Married Peter Pelter in Bedford County in 1795.

Zedikiah's daughter, Falby, had children by William Dickinson of Bedford County. (Wm. 1798-1881)

Zedikiah's daughter, Mahaly, married William Crowder in Bedford County in 1802.

Zedikiah's daughter, Sally, married Grief Wright in Bedford County in 1803.

Zedikiah's daughter, Rachel, married Samuel Coleman in Bedford County in 1803.
