When to Teach Your Child Manners

Manners are ALWAYS in good taste!

Age 3 to 4

Saying "Hello" and "Goodbye"

Saying "Please" and "Thank You"

Shaking Hands

Age 4 to 6

Saying "Excuse ME"

Using a fork and a spoon properly

Asking for food to be passed

Using a napkin

Talking without a mouth full of food

Not making a scene in public

Age 6 to Twelve

Not interrupting others

Saying "Excuse ME" when interrupting becomes necessary

Offering help when it is needed

Showing respect for elders

Refraining from hurtful comments

Responding when spoken to

Respecting property at home and away

Answering the telephone properly

Keeping his or her room clean and picked up

Doing assigned chores cherrfully, punctually, and effeciently

Playing music at a reasonably low decibel level

Respecting the privacy of others

Waiting one's proper turn in line

Saying "Excuse Me" when bumping into someone

Attending to one's guest

Writing thank-you notes for gifts, overnight visits, and special treats

Being punctual

Depositing trash into proper receptacle

Observing rules of safety such as walking, biking, and skating
