Whole lotta lotto
by Edward K Lankford
                                     There she stands silently
                                     Etching in her future
                                     Six numeral visions of happiness
To raise up her raisin dreams

                                     3, 4, 25
What are the chances we’re sitting here?
                                     17, 34, 13 and 1
Who will answer the riddle of random?

There she counts her scanty wages
                                     Fractioning out her investment
                                     In a probability of zero-to-one
That a miracle will salvage her soul.

                                     9, 6, 33
                                     Butterfly numbers shaking our world
                                     22, 22, 7 and 8
                                     Chaos reigns but hopelessness pours.

Her heart pounds with empty wishes
Built on a pile of sandy numbers
Yet each dollar-miss just fills her with faith
And rare, small hits addict her to need.

                                     10, 23, 42
The dice of our lives fall like leaves
                                     50, 21, 17 and 12
When will our numbers be up?
