![]() He started taking lessons, and performed in many plays in his hometown of Columbia. Edward continued to study acting through college, where he performed in a number of Yale productions. He made the decision to pursue acting full-time in 1993. Edward took acting lessons at the Terry Schreiber Studio, in New York, and performed in a number of off-off-Broadway productions, including John Patrick Shanley's "Italian American Reconciliation" and Brian Friel's "Lovers", which Mr. Norton persuaded Edward Albee to see. Mr. Norton has continued to be involved with the Terry Schreiber Studio. A quote from him is featured on the front page of the Terry Schreiber Studio website. Edward Norton:“There are so many schools for a young actor arriving in New York. For me finding the Terry Schreiber Studio proved to be an enormous blessing.” ![]() In February 1994, Edward Norton created the role of Christian Pilgrim in Bill Nave's allegorical "Bible Burlesque", performed with the 29th Street Repertory Theater. What follows is a quote from a review of "Bible Burlesque" written by Julius Novick in 1994: "A young actor named Edward Norton encompasses John D.'s transition from soft-spoken country boy to cocaine-sniffing Off-Broadway hotshot, keeping him likeable all the way." Edward Norton is currently on 29th Street Repertory Theater advisory Board and on the list of contributors. ![]() In the spring of 1994, Edward was cast at Signature Theatre Company as a lead in the world premiere of Edward Albee's "Fragments (A Concerto Grosso)", directed by James Houghton (Edward Norton interviewed Signature Theatre Company's artistic director and founder James Houghton for an article, entitled "Theater that's Making a Mark", published in May 1998 in Interview magazine. Mr. Norton also took the photos that accompanied the article. Read the article.) "When [Albee and I] saw his audition, we thought he was extraordinary," said James Houghton, artistic director of New York's Signature Theatre Company. Edward was subsequently cast, and at Albee's recommendation became a Signature member. "What are those seven things people say about Boy Scouts? Honesty, truthfulness, duty--Edward is all those things," Albee said. "He is one of the two young actors that I've seen in the last few years who really knocked me out. Every once in a while you see a special kind of talent, that makes you say 'Wow!' and Edward is one of those." Mr. Norton is currently a board member at New York's Signature Theatre. |
Edward Norton: “I do miss working in theater, which I haven't done for four years because I haven't found roles in plays that are as challenging as the ones I've been offered in films. I would love to act with the company at New York's Signature Theatre again. I just haven't hit on the right character. There's nothing to compare with the experience of performing on stage. It's a much more 'adrenalized,' intimate experience than working in film.” |
