Chapter History
The organizational meeting of the Edward Rutledge Chapter was held in Lake City on March 16, 1927. The Chapter Charter was granted February 11, 1928.
By unanimous vote the Chapter was named in honor of Edward Rutledge. One of the delegates from South Carolina to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, he was only 26 years of age when he was the seventh signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Born November 23, 1749, in Charles Town, South Carolina, he was educated at Middle Temple in London. In 1772 he returned home to practice law. On March 1, 1774, he married Henrietta Middleton as his first wife.
As a Lt. Colonel in the Charles Town Artillery, he assisted in expelling the British. Later he was captured when Charles Town fell to the British and was sent to Florida as a prisoner until July 1781 when he was exchanged.
On December 2, 1798, he was elected governor of South Carolina. He died January 23, 1800, and is buried in St. Philip's Episcopal Church Yard.
