The pop music industry has done many things of which it should not be proud. You only have to look as far as the current manufactured boy or girl band, or the latest teen "singing sensation", and you can practically see the bags with dollar signs on them being hauled away by oily men with fake tans, as they laugh maniacally, chewing on cigars.
Into this pop world comes Anastacia. On two counts, she bucks the trend:
One - she's not 15... or 16 or even 20. She's someone who has actually been in the business for a while, singing, learning her craft, working her way up. Not old, but unusual by the standards of a business which seemed, for a while anyway, to be picking new female stars at the foetus stage.
Two - she can sing. Yes, she can actually sing. Not "just about hold a note", or "decent enough to get by". She can really sing.
So that's all well and good then. But does she fall into the pre-defined pop slots in any way, I hear you ask? Well, yes. She's easy on the eyes, as all female singers must be to be graced with major label support. Nice face, nice eyes, nice smile. But perhaps most strikingly, that rack.. Mama Mia! A man could go missing in there, and a team of sherpas would have to go searching. And she likes to show 'em off too. When she hit the scene in 2000, it was wonderbras and crop tops for the publicity and papparazzi shots alike. And the videos - well, let's just say that gratuituous poolside bikini scenes have been known to make an appearance. But hey - if you look like that, why not show it off?
Anastacia initially got started as a dancer in music videos after appearing on Club MTV. Remember that show? Back in the days when MTV actually played music (hence the M in their name) they would have a show that consisted on other people dancing in a club... well, a TV studio set up to look vaguely clubbish. The club/studio would be filled with hot young things who knew how to move. We can only assume this was a fusion of music and T&A dreamed up by an overpaid pervert somewhere, and it was borderline unwatchable. But it got Anastacia her start, and she progressed from there.
There is a rumour that Anastacia was born in 1969 (rather than '73) which would have put her at 31 when her first album was released. The music industry has an unwritten law about having to have made it by 30, or you're dropped. It's certainly possible that Anastacia (or her management) felt it might be wise to hedge their bets, and shave 4 years off her age as she was still looking for a contract. A sad reflection on the music industry, and no reflection at all on Anastacia herself: she certainly looks incredible, so if she wanted to make sure some stupid, unwritten rule didn't get in her way, we say go for it!
Then in January 2003, there was something of a shock: Anastacia's management announced that she was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. It transpired that she had gone in for breast reduction surgery (due to back pain), and a lump had been discovered. She quickly started treatment, and has been given the all-clear. Since then, she has been a vocal spokeswoman for breast cancer awareness, particularly since early detection is the key with cancer. It should also be noted that having breast reduction surgery in a business that elevates Pamela Anderson to near-deity status shows great single-mindedness and bravery in itself!
Anyway - let this be a lesson to us all: early detection is the key, folks. Anastacia was back in the studio by September 2003, and the self-titled album was released in March 2004. While it was a great success outside Anastacia's home territory of the USA, it was not even released there, despite being scheduled for August 2004. Anastacia was relatively quiet in 2005. Perhaps due to the failure of her 2004 album to achieve a release in the US, she was asked to release a "Best Of..." retrospective. Although initially unhappy, she now seems to have come to appreciate the resulting Pieces of a Dream collection.
Anastacia released her first live DVD Live at Last on March 27, 2006 in Europe. Consisting of footage from concerts in Berlin and Munich, music videos and a documentary about the preparations and organisation of the tour. She spent much of 2006 doing charity work for Life Ball.
So far in 2007, she has been working on a line of clothing with s.Oliver. A limited edition CD of four tracks is available to consumers who buy the requisite amount of clothing. She is also preparing to marry her UK bodyguard. We've a bad feeling that getting involved with your bodyguard might be a bit close to the dreaded "getting involved with your manager" mistake that some celebs make (such as Holly Valance). But we wish her the best!
As you can see from that last photo, Anastacia took away two trophies from that awards show... but it looks like she brought two trophies with her to begin with! Wow.
