for some reason, i am obsessed with this chair. it is the "ball" or "globe" chair, designed by eero aarnio in the late sixties, and manufactured by the finnish company asko. it is simple, round and friendly, and looks wonderful in pictures. unfortunately, i have never had the pleasure of seeing one in person (let alone sitting in one!) but i hope to have one of my own someday.
- it is made of fiberglass with a metal swiveling base, and with foam/fiberfill upholstery.
- its originally available color schemes were white, red, black and orange (i'm assuming that means a white chair with insides in one of the other three colors), however, i have seen numerous pictures of blue-cushioned ones.
- many times, people who bought the chair had the insides fitted with stereo speakers. eero aarnio himself had one with telephones. but the most spectacular version of the chair that i've yet discovered was in the house of artist victor lukens. he made a spherical chair very similar to aarnio's in shape, but instead of fiberglass, he used one-way mirror. you could sit inside it and look out, but nobody could see you inside of it. admittedly extreme, but it went with the rest of his self-designed apartment filled with clear plastic furniture, white vinyl pillows, and white plastic walls with built-in compartments.
- the standard-issue ball chair was featured in many movies, tv shows, and music videos, such as: tommy (movie version of the who's rock opera), dazed and confused (70s retro movie by linklater), moon zero two (sci-fi movie), the prisoner (sci-fi tv show), a record by the band luna (i don't know the title, but i used to carry around a picture from the record's ad in my wallet), probably michael jackson's scream video - i don't remember, and also in one of the patrick cox stores - he's a shoe designer who has vintage furniture in his shops, which you can purchase for a lot of money. his shoes are expensive, too, but nice.
