In the Santa Lucia Mountains of California, overlooking the Pacific ocean is a magnificent estate of 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways. Its rooms were furnished with an impressive collections of Spanish and Italian antiques and art. Its name is "La Cuesta Encantada"- The Enchanted Hill. Better known as Hearst Castle it was once the home of newspaper publisher William Randolf Hearst and the last great estate produced by America's Gilded Age. |
Today is is a State Historical Monument, its richness and beauty preserved by the California State Park system. |
Heart Castle in located on Highway 1, about half way between San Fransisco and Los Angeles. Hearst Castle is open for tours daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Days. There are 4 distinct tours avaliable. I have taken the first one. I recommend that for those who have not gone before. $17.00 per tour ... well worth it! |
