NO MEN CLUB - THE STORY
BACKGROUND:
No Men-club was founded in the winter of 1994 by two Finnish schoolgirls, whose identities will
not be revealed due to security reasons. Although at the time they were not more than 16 years
of age, they had already had a taste of the darker side of life... the one in which boys
shamelessly broke the hearts of young, innocent girls and ruined their lives.
The two girls
decided it was time to strike back. It was to be their mission to get revenge for all the
broken-hearted girls in the world. They wanted to show that women could be strong, stronger than
the other sex, that women could fight back, that the time had come when men would finally
have to taste their own medicine. There would be no more tears, no more lonely sleepless nights...
instead there would be NO MEN CLUB, which would provide strength and inspiration for all the
women who would join the club and follow its holy principles.
SPREADING:
As soon as the club was officially set up, it became clear that there had been a need for
something like it for a long time. The number of members increased rapidly in the first couple
of months and soon reached its peak of all times (about 10). Although the club kept low profile
and never actually advertised its existence in any way, its reputation spread by word of
mouth and soon The No Men Club was one of the best-known nomen-clubs in Finland, if not in
the whole world. The future looked bright.
THE GOLDEN YEARS:
In 1994-95 No Men Club had about four very active members and
others, who were less active but still fully supportive in spirit. The members took turns in holding
the president chair and other honorary positions. The president had the priviledge of wearing
the sacred necklace. The members had meetings, formal and informal, usually on Friday or Saturday
nights. Whenever a minimum of two members got together, they would have to remember that they were
first and foremost representing the club, and it was to be their pride and joy to let it show.
A few annual holidays were agreed, such as 1.5. and 31.12., and others could be granted at the
president's and board members' decicion.
THE DOWNFALL:
In 1996 the members moved away from their home town and went their separate ways. Although they still
kept in touch, it was getting harder and harder to arrange meetings and keep the club going.
There was a dark cloud hanging over the club: some of the members did not even qualify
to be full club members anymore. In theory, that is. In practice the rules were quite flexible
and allowed the occassional boyfriend as long as a member could prove that the club
came first and that she still swore by the four principles.
TODAY:
There has not been any collective activity for some time, but this should NOT be, by any means,
interpreted that the club doesn't exist anymore. It does, it is alive and well, and always will be...
in the memories of its members. As the old saying goes: "Once a No Men Club member, always a No Men
Club member." The memory of the club will never die. And, who knows, maybe one day it will see a
second coming.
