“Greeneyes” Canharian is a lean, elegant man of close to forty Turns, green-eyed, rough-skinned.  His dark hair is streaked liberally with white.  Though he speaks with Bitra’s clipped accent, he is from Southern Hold.  Canharian is infallibly cool in a crises, and never raises his voice.  If he wants to reach someone in the crow’s nest, he /sings/ the order.  He is absolutely merciless when it comes to the boy Trannon, never letting him have a moment’s rest until his shift is over.  He is well-liked by everyone except gloomy Baledro, who is suspicious of his patient manner, and Garez, who likes nobody but Jandeci.

Jandeci is a brown, wiry girl of twenty Turns, dark-haired and dark-eyed.  She walks with a limp, and hides her hands with leather gloves that go all the way up her forearms.  Her face is narrow and sharp-featured,  vulpine nose and cheekbones a long way from the curious calm of her mouth.  She is quiet and reserved, seldom joking or even cracking a smile.  Jandeci is punctilious, whether it is manners or work.  She keeps close tabs on her rather large amount of luggage, which clinks softly when the ship lists, like glass or pottery.  She tends without comment any injuries the crew receives.  She is liked and respected by the crew, and returns the sentiment, although Jandeci reserves her admiration for Second Mate Garez.

Lanroel is a tall, goldenly handsome young man, blue-eyed and brown-haired, with a breathtaking smile and an impressive physique.  He takes full advantage of the fact to attempt to charm every female in sight.  A braggart, a gambler, and a man with an incredible capacity for wine, Lanroel enjoys the finer side of life.  He dresses in fine linen shirts and brocaded jackets, and if there is an inch of him unornamented, it is only to let the workmanship of his clothing show through.  He is extremely bad with money, and often weasels his way out with a promise of money /tomorrow/ and a puppy-dog look.  He never speaks of his family.  He is despised by Garez and Baledro for being a ‘fop’, and by Kalt and Trannon for his condescending manner.  He gets along well with Ondros, and romances both Isienne and Jandeci—Jandeci mostly when Isienne is angry with him.  Canharian he respects, and Killaria he reveres as the untouchable paragon of feminine virtue.

Isienne is the jewel among dross  on the ship, muscular and beautiful, brown-eyed and black-haired, with skin that never saw a freckle.  She has a dimpling smile, and moves with a grace that comes of having been on a ship for most of her life.  Intelligent and practical, Isienne does most of the repair-work to be had on the /Squareline/.  Much-eyed by all the male members of the crew (except Garez), she is rather mercurial about who she cares for.  Predominantly, it’s Lanroel, but she will descend to flirting with Ondros, Canharian, or even Baledro if she is in a particularly good mood.  She ignores Trannon and Kalt; they are far too lowly for her.  She bristles at Jandeci and even Killaria if she suspects that they are trying to woo her attentive drones away from her.

Baledro is a dour, quiet man, with a long, white, sour face, slitted blue-grey eyes, and a mane of silver-shot auburn hair he attempts to conceal under a seaman’s beret.  The lines in his face deepen every time he frowns.  Although he works with a good will, he is pessimistic to the extreme, and views the entire world with suspicion.  It is rumored that he used to be a runner-thief, but no-one has ever had the nerve to ask him.  Whatever his background, his loyalty to Eris, and, through her, Killaria, is unmistakable.  He is wary of all the crew members but Isienne, with whom he is hopelessly in love.  With Lanroel on board,  he has little chance of gaining the lady’s favor.

Ondros is a jovial, sunbrowned man between thirty and forty Turns old, whose mop of scarlet curls is the subject of many jests among the crew.  With a round, ageless face, and his irrepressible merriment, he appears much younger than he is.  He is rather heavy-boned, and when he stands he is a veritable human wall.  His skill in preparing food easily obtained or transported on a sea voyage is a point of pride on the /Squareline/.  He also holds down the job of a drummer, sending news to the land and to other ships.  He had training as a Harper, but was eventually sent for this job when they found he couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.  He is a fabulous story-teller, and enjoys regaling Trannon and Kalt with wild tales of his youth, with his dark blue eyes so solemn that it is hard to tell if he is telling the truth or not.  He is Lanroel’s tried-and-true drinking companion, and Garez’s personal bane.

Trannon is a much-beleaguered lad, short, scrawny, and with all the usual plagues of adolescence.  His glossy black hair is hacked short to his skull, and puppyish brown eyes follow the captain wherever she goes.  He’s none too bright, and is the lowest-ranking member of the crew, though he bullies and snitches on the ‘landlubber’ Kalt.  Trannon appears to be sorely oppressed by Canharian, who seldom lets him have a moment’s rest, but despite his tattling, he is included in the crew’s vague camaraderie.

Kalt is a retiring young man, nearsighted in typical clerkly fashion, whose vague hazel eyes bear lashes that any girl would kill for.  He is tall, and awkward, and entirely ‘soft’.  He is notoriously bad with anything that can be tangled, as witnessed by his snarled waves of butternut-brown hair.  Kalt is nearly always liberally stained with ink, and the angular face that appears to have been designed by a mathematician is spattered with freckles and shiny red from the sun.  He takes little care with his appearance, as he is seldom anywhere where it would make a difference, and his clothes are nearly worn through, as he seldom has enough wages together at a time to buy a shirt or a pair of breeches.  He stutters badly when addressed by anyone but Ondros, and it is the worst when he is around any of the female members of the crew.  Garez, stern as he is, has the boy speechless.  He is not regarded as one of the crew by anyone but Ondros, eating separately, sleeping separately, always keeping himself apart.  He is strong enough to unload the ship, and his numerical prowess has gotten him appointed chief Seller of Small Goods, those items not requested in bulk.  Quiet and unassuming as he is, Kalt is deeply embarrassed by Trannon’s tales of his landsmanly blunders
