Pygmy Gerbil (Gerbillus gerbillus) Article By Dennis Quinter Northern Pygmy gerbils (Gerbillus gerbillus) are native to northern Africa. Body length is 50 - 130mm., tail length 69 - 180mm. The hind feet are elongated, usually 1/4 of the head and body length. The tail is usually longer than the head and body length. Color is sandy to buff with a white belly. Eyes are rather large and very dark. They will breed all year round with a gestation period of 20 - 22 days. Litter size is one to eight with an average of five. The eyes open at 16 - 20 days and they are weaned at 30 days. They will live about 8 years in captivity. Pygmy Gerbils are burrowing animals that live in dry areas that are sandy or rocky with scarce, coarse vegetation. Their natural diet is seeds, roots, nuts, grasses, and insects. Housing: keep one pair in a 10 gal. aquarium. Use a short piece of PVC pipe for play along with several small cans to go into. I suggest PVC pipe and cans because they will chew everything else to shreds. Keep the bedding several inches deep. These are very active animals and never stop digging and moving the bedding. The food always gets buried. For feed I use Gerbil Mix, Sunflower seeds, raw peanuts, weeds out of the yard, most any greens, any insect except woolly bear caterpillars.
