CANADIAN VISA REGULATIONS
Dear Students,
There has been a lot of confusion over the last few weeks about
the visa regulations for Canada and I thought it would be a good
idea to explain to you all how these work. After reading this,
if you still have questions, concerns, if anything is at all
unclear or if you need help with applying or getting a visa or
visa extension, please come and see Jon or Barbara.
1. You do NOT need a visitors visa to study in Canada if you are from
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, South
Korea, Spain, Sweden, Slovenia, Switzerland.
If you are from one of these countries you can stay in Canada up
to 6 months from the date you arrive here. (This date is stamped
in your passport when you arrive). You are also allowed to go in
and out of Canada, for example to visit the United States as
many times as you want, but remember you should also be
attending school and you need at least 80% attendance to get
your certificate! However you are only allowed to study for 3
months (90 days) at an English School. After that you can only
stay in Canada as a tourist.
2. If you are from a country other from the ones above, like
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador,
Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Venezuela, Vietnam. You need a
VISITORS VISA for Canada.
When you have a Visitors Visa, you can stay in Canada
up to 6 months
from the date you arrive here. (This date is stamped in your passport
when you arrive). You are also allowed to go in and out of
Canada, for example to visit the United States as many times as
you want, but remember you should also be attending school and
you need at least 80% attendance to get your certificate!
However you are only allowed to study for 3 months (90 days) at
an English School. After that you can only stay in Canada as a
tourist.
3. If you are from ANY COUNTRY and want to study at an English
School in Canada for more than 3 months (90 days) you need a
STUDENT AUTHORISATION. This Authorisation can only be received
OUTSIDE CANADA, either in your home country or in the nearest
Canadian consulate which is in Seattle in the United States. The
Student Authorisation costs $125.00 Canadian at the moment. You
can apply and get application forms for the Student
Authorisation from the Canadian Immigration website:
www.cic.gc.ca
All Academic Year Students and students here for more than 3
months (90 days) should have Student Authorisations valid for
the amount of time until the end of your course. If you would
like to apply for an extension of a Student Authorisation, you
can do this and you DO NOT have to leave Canada. You can apply
by getting the form from the website: www.cic.gc.ca. Again for
an extension you need to pay $125.00 Canadian.
On the bottom of all Student Authorisations you will see the words:
NO RE-ENTRY
If you are from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands,
Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Slovenia, Switzerland, this
DOES NOT APPLY. YOU CAN go in and out of Canada up until the
last VALID date on your Student Authorisation.
If you are from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Peru,
Ecuador, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Venezuela, Vietnam. This
APPLIES and you are NOT ALLOWED to go in and out of Canada, even
to the United States. If you are from these countries and wish
to leave Canada, then you will need to apply for a Visitors
visa. This means you need a Student Authorisation and a
Visitors Visa.
4. Finally just a reminder that all the rules above are FOR
CANADA. If you want to visit the United States even for 1 day,
you will need to make sure that you have a UNITED STATES VISA if
you come from a country that requires it.
If you want to go to the United States for a short visit (under
1 month) and you come from: Argentina, Austria, Belgium,
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands,
Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,
Uruguay, you DO NOT need a visa. However you will be required to
fill out a form called a VISA WAIVER at the airport in Vancouver
or at the road border. Also you need to be able to explain to
the United States Immigration officers exactly which place you
are visiting in the United States and for how long.
If you are from another country not listed above, then you must
apply for a United States Visa.
STILL CONFUSED, PLEASE COME AND TALK TO JON or BARBARA!
