I arrived at Culham on Saturday evening with Welsh 2-Day Winner Ed Jones. I hitched a lift with him as my finances are in a sorry state after the World Rounds. I arrived to Bar-B-Q central! Everybody was making the most of the good weather and the long days. Andrew Edwards and Rachael gave me a Bacon Roll using a pair of pliers and a screwdriver as tongs. I then went to see the Evan's/Darby camp to ask how their holiday to Florida was and before I knew it I was sat down with a massive plate of meat left over from their Bar-B-Q. I was beginning to think I was being weighed down for Sundays race!
Sunday dawned bright and hot. I watched the Clubman start then walked the course. I was dissapointed not to see any of the motocross track included but apart from that the course was good with some flat grassy corners that I knew would suit me. The weather was a bit warm for my liking and dust was coming through despite of the heavy watering. I thought if I could make a good start that i'd be okay. I didn't and got passed by a few riders in the first few corners. I made good progress though in the early laps and at around 1hr I passed Ed Jones for 2nd. Knighter was long gone so I slowed the pace to try and conserve some energy for later. Juan then came passed and I followed him for while. For some strange reason my throttle started to stick and during one scary full-throttle moment I passed Juan to regain 2nd before coming into the pits. During the pit stop I got new googles, gloves, camelbak and something to eat and several riders passed me. I then set about recovering the deficit. I caught and passed Ed and Juan but Richard Hay who had pitted early was 50 seconds in front. I reeled in 10 seconds but I was using a lot of energy so I kept a steady pace for a while. Meantime Wayne and Woody were on a charge and Wyn boarded me to say that Wayne was 20 seconds behind and closing. I upped my pace to try and fend off Wayne but he closed the gap to 13 seconds. I made one final push and opened the gap back to 20 seconds. At the flag Wayne was 18 seconds adrift. Richard had encountered problems so I was 2nd behind Knighter who had just managed to get an extra lap in. My best ever Fast Eddy result and £200 prize money from Mr Edmondson. Roll on Hawkstone and some more Bar-B-Q go faster food.
