Billed as the way forward for British Enduros, expectations for the 2003 Hafren 2-day were high. Unfortunately for the Hafren DBC things didn't run as smoothly as they would have liked. Injuries on the cross-country test caused the last test on saturday not to be timed. Then on Sunday the first test on the cc test wasn't timed as it was changed on the saturday night to make it safer. The moto-x test was very tight and twisty but at least it was timed at every visit. The transponder timing system, instead of moving forward from last year actually took a step backwards. There was no digital readout so the riders and spectators could not see the times as they happened. Also the first riders in the Championship Class (me included) had to wait at the start of the test while the computers were changed or something. Then there were the problems with the results. Riders did not know their saturday results before the day started on Sunday. And on Sunday night after the event no results were available so there was no prizegiving. All of the above does not mean that the Hafren was a bad event. On the contrary, most people seemed to enjoy themselves and the in the end that is what Enduros should be about.
David Knight won the event from Juan then me in third. I narrowly beat Juan on Sunday meaning that his 2 point advantage in the championship remains the same. Gizz Edmunds won the experts and Jon Hinam won the clubman. Wayne Braybrook broke both bones in his forearm. I wish him a speedy recovery.
