After the parade they manned an information booth to bring the problem of water contamination to the attention of fair goers. Mingling with the folks, members of the Organization, obtained four hundred and fifty signatures on the first day of the petition for a "Clean Water Law". Marlene Woodason and her two daughters attracted several hundred visitors to our information booth with their face painting. New York State Legislator Joel Miller refused to sign the petition which speaks well as to which side of the environment issue he stands for! This was only part of the insult leveled by our politicians. Rick Lazio, the guy who only last month, stood with us at the Hess Station on Route 9, and vowed to support us. He and Pat Manning hid in the corner of the fair grounds until we folded our tent then proceeded to slink through the few cleanup people remaining as a "crowd". ![]() Several members of the Concerned Residents of East Fishkill met with US Congresswoman Sue Kelly at her Fishkill Office in an effort to solicit her help in stopping the air and water pollution in this community. From her opening comments, that she has lived for years in the area of the first superfund site in New York State, in became evident that she was not going to help. When requested that she investigate the air & water pollution being emitted from the East Fishkill IBM facility she stated sharply "No one want's to lose IBM". When she was informed that IBM has annually released over 135 tons of Volitle Organic Compounds into the air, about 1 pound per month for every resident of East Fishkill, she asked for proof. The proof, IBM's reports to the EPA, were hand delivered to her. This negative attitude toward the environment and her constituents is easily understood in light of her voting history. Sue Kelly can be held responsible for crippling the EPA's ability to protect the environment and punish pollutors. She and her Republican cohorts eliminated the annual Superfund budget of the EPA forcing that agency amoung other things to "de-list" all 84 IBM Superfund sites in the US. (19 of them in New York). |
