For the books I read and found useful in the area of investing and computing.
Technical Analysis of Futures Markets, John J. Murphy
- Most materials of this website come from teachings of this book.
Globalizing Capital, Barry Eichengreen
- A brief history book in monetary system all over the world, from golden
standard to sterling crisis. As you can imagine its not possible to give the history of
the world in 200 pages. Not much details presented in this small book but good enough to
get a general understanding.
Choice, Welfare and Measurement, Amartya Sen
- Articles on newspaper told me that is a great book. Indeed it is a great
work from Sen, but I prefer photocopy the conclusions from each articles and keep that
book in warehouse somewhere... This book is a collection of Sen papers. Very very good if
you have time to read them all.
Soros on Soros, George Soros
- An interview with Soros. Many ideas and philosophy presented here.
Asia Falling ? , Callum Henderson
- Revising your bad memory of losing money... and a comparsion to Mexico
Crisis. Not bad despite its poor binding.
Teachings from the worldly philosophy, Robert Heilbroner
- Interesting book integrating philosophy and economics (actually economics
comes from philosophy thinking), it even has quotation from Bible for economic theory!
Interesting.
First Person - Vladimir Putin, Nataliya Gevorkyan, Natalya Timakova, and
Adrei Kolesnikov, translated by Catherine Fitzpatrick
- Believe the content or not, it is a self-portrait of Putin, the Russia's
president. There are views considering Russia is going back towards socialism after Putin
era comes and this interests me in buying this book. The book is as it stated, a
self-portrait. You may know more from how he describing himself and how he view social
issues Russia. (For example, as he talking principle figures in his mind, both Gorbachev
and Yelstin not in the list... but his wife and daughter, interesting)
香港証券投資-理論與實務, 蔡國強
- If you are interested in stock market but you are not business student, you
must read this. An introduction on stock market in Hong Kong.
香港股市風雲, 藍潮
- History of Hong Kong stock market by people. It recorded many famous takeover
cases in story form. I love this book and its also my university final year project
material.
不以成敗論英雄, 關愚謙
- A collection of articles posted on Hong Kong Economic Journal about USSR and
Russia. I said in this way because its about history in Gorbachev to Yelstin era. Lively
and interesting recent history.
日本政治背後的政治, 趙全勝
- Excellent book investigating cultural influences on political environment in
Japan. A "must" for serious understanding of Japan. The analysis is centered on
Sino-Japan relationship in recent decades and this driven me to buy. It is really good
especially for Chinese to read.
日本通史, 依田熹家
- Japanese history book written in Chinese.
Computing
By the way, I found a bookstore in WanChai, Hong Kong selling English
computer books but published by Tsing Hua University in PRC. The content is exactly the
same as the real one. The price is incredible low !! The original one costs me HK$300 and
it sold for HK$54 !!! Go and take a look if you live in Hong Kong.
P.S. These are not pirate copies.... Prentice Hall authorised Tsing Hua University to publish low price version.
The C programming language 2nd ed., Kernighan and Ritche
- A difficult book but very concise. You will find all you need to know
about C. The index is great too.
Advanced programming in Unix environment, W. Richard Steven
- You must have this if you want to go to details of Unix or Linux. Basic C
knowledge is required.
TCP/IP illustrated, vol 1, W. Richard Steven
- I learn TCP/IP from scratch from this book, Excellent and easy to
understand.
Linux Deployment, various authors and by WROX
- Linux handbook, including deployment with windows environment. Good
introductory book but you may need Unix or Linux reference if you are system administor.
Operating Systems - Design and Implementation, Tanenbaum and Woodhull
- I am still working on this book and I found its explanation is clear. A
reader's review in Amazon.com said he found error even in introduction section and give up
this book. I can't see any problem. Anyway it is a book about OS and explained with Minix.
It would be great if there is one with Linux...
