The photo below was taken during the second phase of training
[after basic] known as ITR (Infantry Training Regiment),
where I [seated, second from the right] was appointed the
role of sergeant for this platoon. This was in part due to
the fact that I was promoted to PFC in basic training--a rare
occurrence in the Marines. And all this despite my claim
as a conscientious objector! And here's a case where a picture
is worth a thousand words... you'll notice I'm flashing a peace sign!
I should also mention that I was the only appointee that remained for the
entire 12 weeks of infantry training. Apparently there were two main reasons for
this. First and foremost, I truly cared about the welfare of the troops, and did
my best to convey to them what at that time [in course of the unfolding of that
despicable war] changed from the classical USMC attitude of training to become
pre-eminent fighting warriors to "getting through combat and coming home
alive." The other reason was the successful outcome resulting from the
effectiveness associated with an individual placed in
a position of authority who doesn't abuse that position.
