A-V guide to Harry Potter's Lingo! for all those who doesn't know... Argus Filch: The crabby caretaker of Gryffindor Tower who's always on the lookout for first-year students who break the rules. Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans: Wizard candy that Harry first samples on his maiden train journey to Hogwarts. But as his friend Ron Weasley warns, you must be careful with Bertie Bott's, because "when they say every flavor, they mean every flavor. You get all the ordinary ones like chocolate and peppermint and marmalade, but then you can get spinach and liver and tripe." Chocolate Frogs: More wizard candy ("not real frogs," Ron assures Harry) that comes with trading cards featuring famous witches and wizards. The cards are also Harry's first clue to the fact that, in photos of wizards, the non-muggles move in and out of the shots. Diagon Alley: The wizard shopping district located on a crooked street with crooked buildings where you'll find Gringotts Bank, Ollivanders Wand Shop and the Leaky Cauldron, Hagrid's favorite watering hole. Draco Malfoy: A bully who's a member of an old wizarding family and Harry's archenemy at Hogwarts. Fat Lady Portrait: A portrait of a fat lady who can move in and out of the painting. Her portrait guards the entrance to the Gryffindor common room. No one can gain admittance without telling the Fat Lady the password. Fluffy: Hagrid's three-head guard dog. Galleons, Knuts and Sickles: Wizard money. "The gold ones are galleons. Seventeen silver sickles to a galleon and 29 knuts to a sickle," Hagrid explains to Harry. Gringotts: The Diagon Alley Bank, run by goblins, where wizards keep their cash and other valuables. Harry's parents left his inheritance there, and it was also the first hiding place of the Sorcerer's Stone. Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin: The four houses for Hogwarts students. Members of each house study, take classes and spend their free time together. Harry with owl pal Hedwig, his personal mail carrier. First-years are divided in the formal sorting ceremony, with those "brave at heart" put in Gryffindor (the home of Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville), the "just and loyal...and patient" placed in Hufflepuff, those of "wit and learning" sent to Ravenclaw and, forebodingly, those "cunning folk [who] use any means to achieve their ends" going to Slytherin. The houses compete throughout the year, winning points (in quidditch, academics and acts of bravery, for example) and losing them (for infractions). The house with the most points at the end of the year wins the prestigious house cup.

Hermione Granger: Harry's overachieving and sometimes uptight friend. Gifted and intelligent, Hermione is a "rules girl," in that she, at first, is very strict about abiding by the Hogwarts policies--and nagging Harry and Ron to do so.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: The wizard training academy and boarding school that Harry is invited to attend when he turns 11. Invisibility Cloak: A "fluid and silvery gray" scarf that Harry receives as a Christmas gift. As the name suggests, it renders a person invisible when wrapped around him or her, allowing the freedom to roam undetected. King's Cross: The train station where Harry catches the Hogwarts Express, from the hidden (to muggles) and magical nine and three-quarters platform. Lightning Bolt Scar: A bolt-shaped permanent mark on Harry's forehead, which he has had since Voldemort tried to kill him when he was a baby. Ministry of Magic: Organization whose job it is to keep muggles from knowing about wizards. Mirror of Erised: A magical and powerful looking glass that reflects the greatest desires of whoever glances into it. "Erised," by the way, is "desire" backward. Mrs. Norris: Filch's pesky cat, who roams Gryffindor and immediately summons Filch if any rules are broken. "It was the dearest ambition of many to give Mrs. Norris a good kick," Rowling writes in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Muggles: Non-magical people. The Dursleys, for instance. And you, probably. Nearly Headless Nick: The resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower. Neville Longbottom: Harry's friend and a nervous student prone to losing his possessions. Nimbus Two Thousand: A top-of-the-line model of broomstick, and the one Harry is given when he makes the quidditch team at Hogwarts. Privet Drive: 4 Privet Drive is the home of the Dursleys, and the house where baby Harry was left after his parents were killed. Professor Dumbledore: The powerful headmaster of Hogwarts. Professor McGonagall: Hogwarts professor of transfiguration and the head of Gryffindor, the first one to recognize what a fine quidditch player Harry would be. Professor Quirrell: The turban-wearing professor of Hogwarts' Defense Against the Dark Arts course. Professor Snape: Hogwarts professor of potions who seems to have an intense dislike of Harry as soon as he meets him.
Quidditch: The official sport of wizards, described as a cross between basketball and soccer. Teams of seven--three chasers, two beaters, one keeper and one seeker--fly on broomsticks and try to get the red ball (called a quaffle) through one of six hoops that are attached to posts. There are also two wild black balls (called bludgers) that fly around during a match and try to knock players off their broomsticks. Each time a team gets a quaffle through a hoop, the team gets 10 points. The quickest way to win a match is for a team's seeker (Gryffindor's Soft-at-heart Hogwarts gameskeeper Rubeus Hagrid. is Harry) to catch the golden snitch, an elusive, superfast, walnut-size ball with wings that flies around and suddenly appears and disappears throughout a match. Catching it means 150 points for a team and almost always means victory for the first team to capture it. Ron Weasley: Harry's best friend at Hogwarts and a member of a distinguished wizarding family. Several of Ron's older brothers also attend Hogwarts, including Percy and mischievous twins George and Fred. All of the Weasleys have red hair.
Rubeus Hagrid: A gentle giant who is Harry's friend and the gameskeeper at Hogwarts Scabbers: Ron's pet rat. Sorcerer's Stone: A stone that can change metal into gold. The stone also produces the Elixir of Life, which makes the drinker immortal.
Sorting Hat: A piece of headwear that reads the minds of first-year Hogwarts students and decides which house they should live in. Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Dudley Dursley: Harry's muggle family. The Dursleys--including Petunia, the sister of Harry's mom, and bratty cousin Dudley--have housed Harry since his parents were killed, but they are ashamed of his wizarding abilities and treat him badly. Voldemort, aka You-Know-Who: The evil wizard--and Hogwarts alum--who killed Harry's parents, James and Lily Potter, and tried to kill Harry when the boy was just a year old. Voldemort strikes such fear in non-muggles they dare not speak his name, instead referring to him as "you-know-who."
