Sixth Grade Course Description

Exploring Music 6 is a nine week course at Thomas Jefferson for students not enrolled in Band, Choir, or Orchestra. It can be taken by itself, or continued in greater depth at the Seventh Grade level.

PHILOSOPHY:The focus of this class is to investigate the many different facets of music and its historical perspective, and to apply that knowledge into everyday living. Musical concepts will be reviewed and applied through playing different folk instruments.

SIXTH GRADE COMPETENCIES: As an outcome of Exploring Music 6, a student should:

1. Identify sounds of different classical and electronic instruments.

2. Examine a variety of selected composers and music which may illustrate various compositional styles and ethnic characteristics.

3. Verbally describe music by identifying mood, style, instruments, and characteristics.

4. In musical terms, verbally defend opinion of different pieces of music.

5. Recognize and distinguish various music meters and rhythmic patterns and physically demonstrate selected rhythmic groupings.

6. Exhibit basic performance knowledge on piano and guitar.

7. Demonstrate comprehension of treble clef notation by playing a short melody on a keyboard instrument.

8. Describe a career in the music field.
