Seventh Grade Course Description

Exploring Music 7 is a one semester course. It may either be taken by itself, or as a continuation of Exploring Music 6.

Philosophy:The focus of this general music class is to investigate the many different facets of music, and to apply that knowledge into everyday living. Musical concepts will be reviewed and applied through playing different folk instruments. Independent and group projects that incorporate musical technology and equipment will broaden the student’s knowledge and understanding of how music is used in the world today.

SEVENTH GRADE COMPETENCIES: As an outcome of Exploring Music 7, a student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate either intermediate competency on two folk instruments, or advanced competency on one folk instrument.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of music theory by composing and playing a short melody on the instrument(s) of expertise.

3. Through aural recognition, analyze a song by structure and components.

4. Musically articulate description and defend opinion of various styles and periods of music.

5. Verbally demonstrate awareness of how music is used in the media.

6. Describe the historical importance of audio-visual equipment.

7. Demonstrate working knowledge of audio-visual systems by connecting together the major components of a stereo system.
