Blueberry Mann (16th level mage) has been trying to research some new spells, but had no money. The elf Rebecca Robin (11th level elf wizard) needs to get cash to build her stronghold and pay the mercenaries she needed to fight off goblins. On the urging of a priest not currently in favor with his superiors, they went with some NPCs to destroy an evil cleric who set up in the Great Moor in north central Karameikos. They were mauled by wolves and werewolves, with several contracting the disease unknowingly. They were assisted by Lady Kelvin, a member of the Order of the Griffon, and the daughter of Baron Kelvin. Together, they continued on their way, and reached the site. They then ran into a banshee, who killed one person with her keening wail, and aged many others several decades, lowering Str, Con, Dex, etc. (The elves weren't bothered too much by the aging...) They caused it to flee back to the ethereal, and entered the tomb. They ran into several other creatures, and fought well, but lost several levels to undead. (Blueberry went from 16th to 12th or so, the elf from 11th to 9th, etc.) Yet, they pressed on and ran into an Eye Tyrant (aka Beholder). There they are, fighting away, with all their spells cancelled from it's anti-magic eye, until they split up (sorta), so they wouldn't all be in its area of effect. They're getting stomped, but due to superior numbers, are winning the fight. The beholder is probably going to flee soon. They've almost put it's main eye out, have damaged it's body, and are getting ready to start in on it's 10 upper eyes. Like I said, it'll probably run if it can. That's were we had to leave off. (We'll get a bit more play in around New Years.) So that's what they did, but they haven't even run into the priests yet. Oh yes, both the elf's and Blue's players were pretty angry at me. Both were close to next level. Blue needed maybe one more adventure to get to 17th, and now he's back to 12th. I'm so cruel. :) Ha ha!
The funny part was, they complained that I put them up against such tough monsters like a beholder, and a banshee; something I haven't done so often in the past. My thinking is, if you've got over one and a third million experience points, you can't always be expected to fight goblins every time. Am I wrong?!?!?
Besides, they've taken more damage from the wolves than anything. Wolves are 2 HD creatures; dire wolves and werewolves have 4+1 and 4 HD respectively. They still fight low level things- not effectively, but they do. If Lady Kelvin hadn't've shown up during the battle, they'd have LOST!!! To wolves!!!
Hmmm, guess the beholder didn't have to run away. They fled to a different adventure, abandoning their NPC allies to die. Oh well...
It ain't easy to be a hero.
