Edmonton International Folk Dancers F.A.Q.

Welcome! Come in and make yourself at home. This page will assist in answering your questions about our society. If you have further questions, please feel free to ask one of the members.

What is recreational International Folk Dancing?

It is, as the name suggests, an opportunity to learn and dance traditional dances from all over the world. It is a social event -- an opportunity to meet new friends, to socialize and to dance to great music!

Do I need experience?

No - we offer classes every week. The group comprises beginners and experienced dancers.

Do I need any special equipment?

Just you and your feet - and a desire to have fun! Soft-soled shoes make it easier to dance and non-street shoes keep the floors clean.

Do I need a partner?

No - most of the dances do not require partners; they are done in lines and circles. We do some couples dances that require a partner, but there are many of us who come alone and we just mix 'n mingle.

Where do you meet?

We dance at McKernan Community Hall, 11341 - 78 Avenue.

When do you dance?

We meet Friday nights from the beginning of September to the end of May, with a break for Christmas.

Advanced class starts at 7:30 PM. Regular class starts at 8:00 PM and request dancing runs from 9:00 to 10:15 PM.

How much does it cost?

Only $75 for the entire season - including instruction. We also offer a drop-in rate of $5 per night.
2007-2008 (September to May) membership rates are:
Regular membership [18 years and over] - $75
Student full-time membership [18 years and over] - $50
Youth regular membership [12 to 17 years] - $40

Do I have to perform for an audience?

No. We dance for our own enjoyment.

Can I bring my children?

Children are welcome. We ask that parents be responsible for ensuring that their children are not disruptive. For everyone's safety, children who are not participating in the dancing must stay out of the way of the dancers.

Thank you for coming to Edmonton International Folk Dancers. If you have any further questions feel free to ask anyone, if they can't help you, they will find someone who can.
