Dirk Pieter is 16 years old and has been
street inline skating since he was 7 years old.
On Friday March 16th 2001 he went
to ice skate with his school classmates to DE UITHOF in The
Hague.
He saw some kids training figure skating
jumps and spins during a public session.
He joined them on rented hockey skates
and started trying out the stuff they were busy with.
He loved it and was hooked. He asked his
father that very same week-end to call the trainer:
Samantha Bennis and arrange for regular
training sessions.
Unfortunately the winter season ended on
March 31st and the ice rink closed down untill October.
Dirk Pieter and Samantha both live in
Rotterdam and the only alternative was to continue the training
sessions on inline skates. DP picked up
all the basic edges, turns and jumps very quickly.
It became apparent that for an
experienced inline skater learning ice figure skating technique was not a
problem.
The problem were: THE SKATES
!!!
It is very difficult to figure skate on
unrockered street inline skates.
Toe-assisted jumps and spins are possible
but not particularly comfortable.
So Samantha searched on internet for
INLINE ARTISTIC SKATES and discovered the PICSKATE COMPANY
WEBSITE.
She ordered two pairs (one
for DP and one for herself) and the book: "How to
Jump and Spin on In-Line Skates".
And that was the beginning of the
ice/inline adventure:
Training during the week after
school on PICskates and on Sunday mornings on ice in Antwerpen,
Belgium.
DP soon mastered all the basic
jumps and spins on both PICskates and on ice skates
and even started learning
basic ice dancing steps and turns
and learnt the
compulsory dances required for the elementary KNSB ice dancing tests.
The Winter 2001/2002 season
started in October in DE UITHOF and DP trained three times a
week.
He participated in the KNSB CUP
championship in Den Bosch in February, passed his elementary singles and ice
dancing tests in March.
And did his first SHOW SKATER
appearance at the IJSGALA 2002 in Tilburg ice dancing with
KYRA VANCRAYELYNGHE!
on April 13th 2002. He also
gave INLINE ARTISTIC demonstrations during the KNSB Youth Skate Camp in
Groningen on May 2nd and
at the Dutch National Artistic
Roller Skating Championships in Kerkdriel on June 29th. He trained very hard for
the World Inline Freestyle Championships in Wuppertal on September 29th.
Unfortunately he was unable to participate due to unforeseen
circumstances.
His next skating competition on
ice will be the KNSB CUP 2003!
He won the first championship of
the KNSB CUP series in Den Bosch on January 25th 2003!
He won the third championship of
the KNSB CUP series in Dordecht on March 15th 2003!
He won the KNSB CUP 2003
Finals in Heerenveen on March 23rd 2003!
Dirk Pieter has passed his figure skating tests on ice (KNSB 6th,5th,and 4th) in less
than a year!
BRONZE MEDALIST at the KNSB Novice Nationals
2004!
