Takashi Miike 1960-

Biography

Born in Osaka, Takashi originally held aspirations of becoming a motorbike racer but soon developed a taste for film. This prompted him to study film at the Yokohama Academy of Visual Arts. This study, far from giving him a respect for the rules of film-making, gave him a desire to break as many of them as possible and to approach film-making from a whole new angle. Takashi began directing straight-to-video movies as well as a lot of work making TV serials. He continues to do this despite being one of Japan's most prolific diectors, He has produced over 20 feature films since his debut in 1991. Despite being fairly well known in Japan for a while, it took the release of Audition in 1999 to bring him to the attention of western audiences who were suitably impressed with his striking film-making style. Takashi has often come under criticism for his unconventional style and violent content, but he simply brushes it off stating that he likes to make movies that are impossible to pidgeonhole into any one genre.
