peregrinos make their way to the shrine on their knees. many wore knee pads or other protective garments, while others continued with torn clothing from the attempt. these pilgrims come everyday in homage to the Virgen Mary, although on the 12th and 13th of each month, from what i understand, it is practically impossible to even find standing room in this giant square. see the smoke on the right-hand side? it's from a giant fire which burns from people throwing in huge candles.
