Each helmet contains a different soundtrack, and each has been heavily panned so as to create a sense of inbalance in the claustrophobic space of the helmet. As the fluid of the ear drums become confused by the panning the viewer becomes physically unbalanced. The sound piece was was created by mixing existing sound samples, as well as original recordings. Each sound has been manipulated so as to become distorted and often times unreconizable. The only recognizable elements are lyrics from popular songs, and melodies from science fiction films including 2001:A Space Odyssey, and Star Wars. Lyrics were sampled from a variety of pop songs including songs from Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Tom Petty and Deee-Lite. When the helmets are listened to in sequence they take the wearer on an erotic, orbital journey, simulating a fictional romantic encounter with a space suite. |
