Heinävesi lies in Finland's lake district

Summer
begins in June, and means being outdoors, preferably at the summer cottage. Regular visits to the lakeside sauna with vasta or vihta, a bunch of birch twigs are a must. So are grilled foods, sausages in particular.

Midsummer when the sun never sets marks the highlight of summer celebrations. You'll find most of the bigger town centres turn into ghost towns as everyone starts their migration to the countryside to celebrate real juhannus with their friends and relatives. Homes and cottages are decorated with wild flowers and two leafy birch trees are placed in front of the house. Midsummer is the day of the Finnish flag, and one of the most popular wedding days in Finland.

On Midsummer Eve a big bonfire of wood and branches is lit at midnight on lakeside or an island, and open air dance halls are packed with people.

What more refreshing after a hot day of haymaking! Read some Sauna tips by Mikko Norros and Joe Brady, Virtual Finland.
