Winter
begins when the mean temperature goes below zero.
With a few exceptions, winter normally begins in Heinävesi
at the beginning of November. The weather was not
like real winter at the beginning of December when we
made the winter observations.

part of the snow melted, Wednesday foggy, snow
melted, Thursday rainy, Friday rainy. The weather was
much warmer than usual at the beginning of December.
Before this week we had a winter of two weeks with
snow but autumn came back for this week. Even ice
melted from small lakes after this week.
The
real winter began in the middle of December when the
small lakes froze, and the big lakes froze a week
later.The winter temperature is often -10 - -20
degrees in January and February but it changes often.
The snow cover is 50 - 80 cm in February and March. The
days may be quite warm by the middle of March but the
nights are often very cold.
