Shining Stars

DEVIL'S NITE
Vocalist August, bassist Tim Lafferty, guitarist Michael Scott, and drummer Mark Causley.
From the streets of Detroit, to the clubs and radio stations throughout the world, Devil’s Nite has become one of the best young rock acts to hit the music scene in many years. With a sound that’s been compared to early Van Halen, but with a ‘90’s edge, this band has the drive and the ability to bring hard rock back to the center stage of modern musical feast of original music. Since forming in the spring of 1992, the foursome from Detroit has released a musical feast of original music. On the menu is: Just For the Hell Of It (1993), The Judas Factor (1994), Caustic (1996), and Primitive (1999). With all four members of the group contributing equally in the writing process, each song has a unique taste that will satisfy even the most hard to please appetites. From The Judas Factor came Devil’s Nite’s first radio single, Raging Storm, which received both national air play on the Z-Rock radio network as well as international air play in Denmark, Italy, Canada and throughout Europe, on U.S. Military Radio. Having established themselves as one of the most energetic/entertaining acts in Michigan, the band went on to win the 1994 Mid-Michigan Best Band Competition and later, won nominations for the Best Live Act, Best Band and Best Guitarist in the 1995 Detroit Live Award (voted on by both bar owners and fellow musicians). With their reputation growing with every show, the band became one of the only local bands to grace the cover of the Weekender Magazine, following in the footsteps of such acts as Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, Aerosmith, and Motley Crue. In 1995 thru 1997, Devil’s Nite found even further success throughout the musical world. The band has opened for such artists as Saigon Kick, Great White, Quiet Riot, Vince Neil, Lita Ford, Firehouse, Slaughter, L.A. Guns, Bang Tango, Enuff Z’nuff, Union, and Dokken and have done several dates on Warrant’s Ultraphobic and Belly To Belly tours, including four shows in Michigan. In March of 1996, the band was flown to Las Angeles, CA. to record Caustic at Dreamstate Studios, where members of WARRANT personally worked with Devil’s Nite in the completion of the CD. Their newest CD entitled Primitive, released on February 20, was their first release on Primitive Records. For merchandise information write to: Devil’s Nite, c/o Primitive Records, P.O. SOULMOTOR
Vocalist Darin Wood, bassist Brian Wheat, guitarist Tom McClendon, and drummer Mike Vanderhule. Soulmotor is a band that lets their music do the talking for them. Their debut album, Soulmotor represents only the second new artist to be released by CMC International Records, a label known primarily for its affiliation with “heritage” rock and roll artists. According to label President/CEO, Tom Lipsky, “When I went looking for our first new artists to sign the most important thing was the music. Soulmotor is a very contemporary hard rock band with heavy yet melodic songs that will definitely make sense for Active, Mainstream and Modern Rock Radio.” As a matter of fact, the label is so sure of the band’s ability to cross radio formats, that the first single, “Guardian Angel” is being released to various radio formats. All the songs on the album are powerful, guitar-driven rockers that will appeal to a wide fanbase. Songs like “Lizard Boots” and “Sound of Her Wings” have the harder -edge than the more melodic “Fallen” or “Good Day To Die”. Yet, there is consistency throughout the album that allows this blending of modern rock with standard hard rock. Soulmotor has managed to create an album of songs that will generate hit single after hit single. Hailing from Sacramento, California, Soulmotor came together a couple of years ago when vocalist Darin Wood ex-Tesla bassist Brian Wheat and guitarist Tom McClendon decided to write some songs together. “We’ve all played in bands around the Sacramento area for years,” explains Brian, “so it made sense that we would eventually do something together.” They songwriting went so well that they were soon ready to put a complete band together and added drummer Mike Vanderhule. “The main thing we decided to do differently with this band,” says Darin, “is NOT to go out there and become everyone’s favorite local band. We were much more focused on the quality of our music than playing gigs.” For the past two years, the band, particularly Wheat , Wood, and McClendon who write all the songs, have spent the time honing material and then playing an occasional show to tighten up the performance. Not only do the songs on this album have appeal for a wide range of radio formats, but it’s obvious they will translate well into solid live performances. . “Now that we’ve made the record, “ says Darin, “we’re ready to focus on getting out there and playing in front of an audience.” The album Soulmotor, is being commercially released by CMC in North America on April 27, via BMG Distribution. International releases by CMC licensees SPV Gmbh (Europe), JVC Victor (Japan &Asia) and Shock Records (Australia & New Zealand) will be simultaneous. Plans call for Soulmotor to enter the North American tour market by May or June 1999, with dates continuing throughout the summer and fall.

ABUSE MENT PARK: Welcome to the Heavily Sadistic Sound Circus, known to fans above and underground worldwide, as Abuse Ment Park, or A*M*P. The members are vocalist Mr. Ginger Bond, bassist Sandra Eve, guitarist Dustin Ordner, keyboardist/sampler James Swann and drummer Dr. Rude. Go to this Abuse Ment Park and BEWARE, you are in for one sick and twisted ride. It's raw. It's nasty, but it may be just the thing for you if you like your music very dark screeching, melodic, throbbing, sexual, pounding, angry and violent. Music that grabs you by the throat with body slamming riffs and an iron clad bottom end. Music that exposes deep rooted thoughts in the subconscious of all. Here's a little history for you. Abuse Ment Park was founded in 1991 by freakish frontman Mr. Ginger Bond in LA, CA. There, and in the Bay area, the band performed for two years, playing with local and national acts, also developing a large cult like following. Abuse Ment Park members, Mr. Ginger Bond and erotic bassist Sandra Eve, relocated to Seattle in March 1993. Soon they were performing all over the NW, winning the 3rd annual KISW/Samuel Adams Battle of the bands in May 1995. In May 1996, they released their 1st CD, I Am Not What I've Been Taught. The Bond family, still not content with their NW playground, opted for a U.S. playground, touring incessantly, including playing the 1996 Milwaukee Metal fest. They gained attention and press all over. Finding AZ full of great opportunities, they landed in Phoenix in fall 1996. In no time at all they found themselves one of the top players in the AZ scene, however still doing mini-tours all over the U.S. throughout 1997, including showcase at the "Expo of the Extreme" in Chicago on Halloween. They receded into the depths of the studio in early 1998 and reappeared with 10 new tracks which they call Electric Spanking Session. PROJECT 86
Hailing from Southern California, the four members of Project 86 take the basic elements of modern, hard edged music (reminiscent of Tool and Stavesacre), and mix a serious dose of aggressive rap-styled vocals, yielding an intense sound that places them in the same arena with bands like Rage Against The Machine, The Deftones, Korn and POD. Project 86 began it's cross-pollination of genres two years ago when Schwab and drummer Alex Albert's longtime dream finally came together. Joined by guitarist Randy Torres and bass player Steven Dail (who replaced Ethan Luck now with the Dingees), Project 86 spent several months honing its hip-hop influenced hardcore sound often referred to as "rapcore," and now the band is ready to spread it's wings well beyond the Orange County scene where they've been known to share the stage with the likes of the Supertones, Five Iron Frenzy and Stavesacre. Schwab is the band's primary songwriter and says Project 86's music has two very distinct purposes, the first being a physical response to what the listener hears on the self titled debut on BEC and especially live in concert. "We just want to write music that makes people go psycho," Schwab says. "That's basically our goal. When we sit to write a song, we just say to ourselves 'okay, is that going to make kids and us go crazy? Is this going to drive the emotion level of our audience to the extreme?" The second response Project 86 hopes to invoke is also aimed at the recipient's emotions, but this time, they're looking for a more substantial and longterm end to the unconventional means. "Our music is meant to probe," Schwab says.

CUTTERS
After five years of hard work and overcoming numerous obstacles, Cutters, Bloomington, Indiana's favorite sons, are ready to be introduced to the rest of the world. Throughout the Midwest, they are already well-known and respected among college students and the entire music community, who have already been supporting their concert performances and self-released music for years. Now, with the international release of their album Sonic Wave Of Love on CMC International Records, a joint venture label with BMG Entertainment, the rest of the world is about to find out what Indiana music fans have known for some time. Tommy Berry (guitar, vocal), Rob Calder (bass, backing vocals, 12-string guitar), Pete Wilhoit (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Bill Maki (keyboard, percussion) are four friends from Bloomington who have been creating and performing original music together since 1993. Their new, worldwide record label signing with CMC International Records is not their first taste of a music career with a professional label, however. In the mid-1990's, A&M Records flew them to L.A. to record demos of their music, only to subsequently notify them that the A&R representative who had discovered them was no longer with the company, eroding the support that they had cultivated from within the label. They devoted themselves the next several years to writing more original music and performing their songs in concert, developing their creative skills until they themselves felt that they were ready to take their music to a larger audience. Not deterred by their previous experiences, they decided to move independently rather than lose opportunity to a corporate shuffle. They borrowed the money needed, went to Memphis and recorded their album themselves. Shortly thereafter, they joined forces with Scott LePore and BRPM Management, and formed the company Green Van Records to begin self-promoting their recordings. Once the album emerged, the word spread quickly among both fans and the industry, and a number of labels began to court the band. Following a showcase in New York for label representatives, their choice was to enter into a multi-album relationship with CMC International Records. "We like the fact that Tom (Lipsky, CMC President/CEO) came to Indiana to meet with us and see us live," explains Berry, "it was obvious that he was really into signing the band. That, and the fact that the label's giving us creative independence to make the record we want to make. It wasn't a really hard decision in the end." For CMC, signing Cutters is the company's first major step into the future. Lipsky explains that "..the logical evolution for CMC is to enter the new artist arena, with a band that we feel can have the commercial longevity and artistic significance that many of our 'heritage' artists have had and continue to have on the rock industry and music fans across the world. Cutters is that special and distinctive type of band, prolific in their songwriting and unforgettable in their performances that we feel can have immediate impact in 1999 and that will carry diversified audiences into the next century." "Satisfied," the debut single from Cutters was released to rock radio on Jan 12. The album, Sonic Wave Love was released commercially by CMC International on February 23, 1999.

the rumors
Rob Marlin (Lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Jon Beyl (Lead guitar), Sam Powers (Bass, vocals), and John Shireman (Drums, vocals). Like most of us, Rob Marlin spent a lot of time as a child dusting off his father's Beatles albums and spinning them on the family turntable. Who'd have thought then that the melodies of Lennon and McCartney would inspire him to create his own melodies someday? The end result of those hours spent listening to those fab melodies and others is a band called the rumors, a pop quartet from southern Indiana whose style has drawn comparisons to The Wallflowers and the Bodeans. Rob, John, Sam and Jon began writing together four years ago in a pole barn, which eventually led these four twenty-somethings to Cellar Records and their debut album, Pacific. Rob and John hooked up with Jon and Sam after their respective bands parted ways. Jon asked Rob to sing lead for a handful of previously arranged gigs, Rob brought Jon on board and the rumors were born. The band members found they had similar tastes in music as well as having known each other during high school (all but Beyl attended the same school in Clarksville, Indiana). "We had such a simple approach to learning songs and performing that playing together came naturally to us," Rob said. "When it came to writing songs we had so much stage experience that we could almost read each other's minds. That allowed us more time to spend on the nuts and bolts of the songwriting, as opposed to wasting time trying to figure out how we were supposed to play them together." The album itself is loaded with listener-friendly purposeful pop tunes, taking the listener through a range of themes and emotions. From the tale of small town tragedy that plays out in the poetic, "One More Chance" to Shireman's Beatle-esque "Sacrifice" to the melodic toughness of "All I Want", the rumors turn out smart pop songs that not only are accessible but memorable, as well. No surprise there. What else would you expect from a group whose lead singer named his dog after Jackson Browne?

PARADISE ALLEY
< Steve Vincent (vocals/harmonica), Kenny Reid (guitar/backing vocals), Steve Thompson (drums/backing vocals), Tajinder "Cosmic" Sagoo (rhythm guitar), and Mark Harkin (bass/backing vocals). Right now Steve Vincent doesn't care if he has a place to live. The lead singer and harmonica player for Delinquent Record's only British glam-punk band, Paradise Alley just wants to make it as a musician with his bandmates--guitarist Kenny Reid and Taj, drummer Steve T, bassist Mark Harkin. An issue in finding a flat is money. "Whenever any of the band holds down day jobs, most--if not all of the money goes to Paradise Alley's needs. Even without jobs, it's the same story. When it comes down to the choice between even food or getting things for the band, music wins every time." Steve has been homeless several times. While he has found life to be an adventure, crashing at different friends' houses, he understands there are folks in the world that aren't so fortunate, and he's interested in helping hardcore homeless folks find some comfort in their day-to-day lives. It is important that Steve and bandmates spend their money on their music--finding gigs, promoting gigs, and traveling to gigs. And now that Paradise Alley have played almost every rock club in England, and nearby Scandinavia, they are spending even more money to set up a touring base in the United States. Helping out is their record company, Delinquent Records--the Alabama-based label that has found a ton of encouragement from the media and music industry in the past year. "We've been to the states once before," explained Steve. "Although we played some shows, it really wasn't to tour but to make connections. We fell in love with New York City, especially. Kismer with the Big Apple was inevitable for the band. When Paradise Alley formed in 1992, they were influenced by the bands that Steve grew up with--New York Dolls, Rolling Stones, Hanoi Rocks, Aerosmith and the Sex Pistols--all of whom had some home base and influences in the New York City music scene. "In so many ways, New York City is our spiritual home. The bands that inspired us include The Dolls, Blondie, the Ramones, Voivods, Dead Boys, Velvet Underground, Television and Electric Angels. Movies also influenced us, and our favorite actors are Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra. I also love Sinatra's music. Paradise Alley has a couple of recordings that are circulating throughout the world. First release was a three track cassette promo which includes a cover of Hanoi Rocks' "Shakes. "The 1994 cult-classic album is Psychotic Playground which was released by the band. The latest Paradise Alley disc is Heartbreakers and Homewreckers which was recently picked up by Delinquent Records. EXTOL
David Husvik (Drums), Christer Espevoll (Guitars), Peter Espevoll (Vocals), Eystein Holm (Bass), and Ole Borud (Guitars). Fueled by a love for not only the classic Death sound, but also for classical Heavy Metal, Thrash and Speed Metal, EXTOL once again pumps a well deserved injection of creativity into the genre with their ultra-technical, extra-brutal and super tight whirlwinds of sound. Combining the forces of Death Metal's brutality and Heavy Metal's lust for exploring harmonies, EXTOL manages to make a record that is just as appealing to a fan of Morbid Angel or Death as to someone who loves IRON MAIDEN or MANOWAR. Exploring every range of the genre and beyond EXTOL certifies themselves as THE band to keep your eyes on. EXTOL was formed in the beginning of 1994 by David, Christer and Peter. A few months later Eystein joined the band as a permanent member. EXTOL fast developed from being merely a straight Metal band to play a kind of Power/Death Metal, but they wanted to take it further and explore new musical areas with no limitations. The summer of '95 the need urgently arose to expand the band and another guitarist (Emil of Royal) was brought in to be able to experiment with two guitars. Ole Borud, known from the Norwegian Death/Doom Metal pioneers SHALIACH did finally fill the void of the second guitarist, and brought with him not only brilliant melodies and songwriting skills, but also being the last key to unlock EXTOL's very special creativity and set their focus firm. By blending influences from various areas such as classical music, jazz, progressive metal and even industrial with their own musical background and their very own perspective of writing music the result was stunning and could only be described as their own unique sound. And that's where the band is today musically; brutal, experimental Progressive Death/Black Metal but yet with strong melodies. EXTOL is definitely a live band. Well known for their excellent shows, they have played numerous live shows all around Scandinavia as well as a couple of festival gigs the summer of '98 in the US, and developed a stage presence seldom seen. They are being able to maintain their super tight musicianship live, and seeing them presenting their very best goes beyond being only a musical experience - it's truly an occasion for all senses!
