Pit Houses

There aren't very many pit houses on display. Pit houses, being made of earth, don't leave many traces. Pit houses are much more delicate in terms of traffic, much less tourist resistant. Some of the villages, having been placed in strategic locations, were later covered by pueblos. The pit houses on display are placed under shelter to protect them from the weather and the tourists.

Pit houses were the first of the constructed, semi permanent dwellings. The marked the change from the nomadic Basketmaker culture to the more agrarian Anasazi culture.
