Pueblos


Although the cliff dwellings get most of the publicity at Mesa Verde, there are many pueblos scattered throughout the area. Why some preferred to live in cliff dwellings and others lived in pueblos is a question with many varied answers. My opinion is, "We weren't there and so we'll never know."

The structural features are interesting so here are some views:



I think this pueblo is called Fairview. It's been a long time ago since I was there. One of the things that is interesting is the use of rectangular doors instead of "T" shaped doors or roof entries. This is a very large pueblo. From the photos below, it is possible to get an idea of the size of this pueblo. By looking at how the walls are joined, it's possible to see how the pueblo grew.


Another point of interest is the storage pits in the picture at the right. Most storage pits I've seen are individual and not in the communal style pictured here.
