A 33-year-old New Hampshire native who says he leads the "most violent rock and roll band in the country" and who calls Charles Manson a "genius," will undergo a psychiatric examination as the result of felony charges recently filed.
Kevin M. Allin, who goes by the initials "GG" and brags about beating himself senseless during concerts by his group, "The Disappointments," appeared in front of 15th District Court Judge George W. Alexander Wednesday for examination on a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
The felony count stems from an incident in April when Ann Arbor police said Allin beat and burned a 25-year-old woman in her North Fourth Avenue apartment. The victim, who Allin said is a "groupie," spent 12 days in the University of Michigan Hospital Burn Center being treated for what physicians said were extensive leg burns.
Allin, a native of Littleton, N.H., who says he has been in rock bands since he was 13, also is charged with two counts of assault and battery stemming from an incident at an April performance in the U-M's East Quadrangle. Ann Arbor police said Allin jumped off the stage, kicked a woman spectator in the stomach and hit another student with a chair.
Allin claims those actions are part of the violent nature of his band's performances.
The examination for Allin was adjourned when R. William Schooley, a court-appointed public defender who had spent more than two hours interviewing Allin, asked Judge Alexander for a delay so his client could be examined at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry at the Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital.
Assistant Prosecutor Larry Burgess had no objection to the adjournment and Alexander ordered Allin, who is being held at the County Jail on $10,000 bond, to submit to the examination.
The adjournment enraged Allin who, in a telephone interview with The News, said he may defend himself.
"I didn't want an adjournment. I know I'm not guilty. I don't need to see a shrink. I want to go on with this, prove this is a bum rap," he said.
"Look, this woman invited me and the band to her apartment. She wanted us up there. She got mad because the whole band wouldn't come around her. She never objected to anything at the time."
Allin, who was extradited from Chicago last week, says he has a close friendship with John Wayne Gacy, now on death row in Illinois for kidnapping and murdering 33 young boys with whom he had homosexual relations.
"Yeah, I went to see him in the death house," Allin says. "I spent six hours with him. It seemed like 10 minutes. He's a good guy. He's my father figure. I don't care what he did. I don't hold that against him. I'm not here to judge him. I think he's a great guy. Same thing as John Hinckley. I tried to get in touch with him. I wrote him. I wanted to talk with him about that shooting. That's how the Secret Service picked me up in Illinois. They found out I was trying to see Hinckley. So they grabbed me. And here I am in this jail in Michigan, wasting time, waiting for a shrink"
The rocker calls Charles Manson, who is serving a life sentence for directing a series of murders including that of actress Sharon Tate, "He a genius...a mastermind."
"I would follow him," Allin said.
