The Village Voice - #33 (V.38) - 17-AUG-1993

untitled

It seems like everyday more and more bands are going soft in hopes of commercial success. Their sounds are becoming more mainstream rock sounding, their lyrics are voluntarily censored, who they play too/for doesn't matter any more, their performance is predictable. Like him or not, GG Allin was pushing that envelope in the exact opposite direction. You didn't have to like what he did, but the sheer force of his approach was inspirational. The man definitely set new limits to just how far you can go with rock 'n' roll and performance art, limits that will not be met in the near future, if ever. Now GG is dead, but will hardly be forgotten. He's left behind him a legacy that will keep people spinning stories of his infamous shows for decades - and all those stories will be true. It's scary to think what will happen now, no one even comes close to filling his shoes, nobody probably wants to. Hopefully the envelope GG pushed will get filled in with some daring bands and not just flap back into our faces.
