Furries

I draw structure of a furry just like the structure of a human, only with added things like ears and a tail and maybe longer legs or feet. For this tutorial, I'm going to draw Jezebel, my ermine character from Redwall. As with all my drawings of characters, I start with a circle for the head.

Next, I scetch in Jez's facial structure, shoulders, and a circlish thing for her rib cage. I'm going to be drawing her facing forward, just for better viewing. I draw lines bisecting her face and her chest so I know where everything goes later.

Now I'll scetch in the basic shape of her breasts and hips. I've decided that I'll have her standing with one hand on her hip and the other arm just sort of hanging there, and I draw in the basic shapes of them. Circles and ovals are very useful, even though my ex-boyfriend used to tell me that "Using shapes are for people who don't know how to draw." Well, I'd just like to show him all the professional animators down at Disney who I watched draw characters for Tarzan using basic shapes ^_^

Now for her right hand and her legs... Legs are some of my worst body parts, so bear with me ;) Jezebel has considerably longer legs than any of my other characters, who all tend to be rather short, and so I have to keep that in mind. Up until now, you wouldn't really be able to tell this scetch of a furry apart from any scetch of a human or elfy thing that I might be doing. But Jez's feet tell her apart from humanoids-- they're much larger and longer.

I make her outline darker and smoother, then erase all the little lines inside her. I also draw in some fur on her face that sticks out, and her tail and ears ^_^ You've got to remember, during this part, that people's appendages don't just attach to their bodies, they flow into them... sorta... well, you know what I mean. They're not like those teddy bears with the joints that swivel around. You've got skin and ligaments and junk under there ;) I also draw in a couple of lines to show where her knees are, and make her fingers and knuckles more pronounced.

Now for my favorite part, her face! I usually save this for around the end because I like to do it so much ^_^ I draw in her nose first to get my bearings, and then put in her eyes. Getting them symmetrical enough to look realisic is probably the hardest part of the face. Then I decide that because of her body language, she probably looks a little ticked off, and I draw in her eyebrows and mouth to convey that. Then I draw in her hair (it's short and scruffy) which takes me a considerable amount of time to get the way I want... and it still isn't exactly perfect. Oh well.

Next I shade in her ears and the tip of her tail, which are black, and draw in her clothing. This part isn't too hard because I already know what she wears all the time. She's one of those characters who always has the same costume on ^_^ Her shirt is off her shoulders and is puckered at the top and around the sleeves by pieces of ribbon that are wound through the fabric. Then I draw in her magic sarong skirt which often defies all laws of physics.

To finish the drawing, I erase all the parts of Jezebel that are covered up by her clothing. This is why I often draw people in tight clothes-- I always have to get the legs and arms and stuff perfect and I don't want to cover them up with lots of fabric ;) I'm also not as good as I'd like to be at drawing stuff that folds and droops. Anyway, I finish off the picture by drawing Jezebel's anklets (she wears a lot of them) and making any adjustments that I have to to make it look the way I want.

And there we have it ^_^ That's the way I draw Jezebel, and most every other furry person I draw. I make adjustments for their facial structure and height and weight and stuff, but everything is generally the same. When you're drawing your characters, you have to remember that they all don't have the same skeleton-- some might have a longer face or smaller feet or whatever. But all humanoid things (no matter if they're furry or elven or whatever) all go by basically the same format. I hope that helps you ^_^
