Mamiya Chiba is the boy who was Mikage's reason
for creating the Black Rose Duelists. He is Tokiko Chida's younger
brother, and quite ill. When Mikage first used to come over to
see Tokiko, he would see Mamiya in their rose garden, and Tokiko
would scold him for getting out of bed. Mamiya and Mikage
grew closer together, and when Nemuro Memorial Hall burnt
down Mamiya confessed as the arsenist. This may have been to
take the blame off of Mikage, but it isn't really specified.
Anyway, when Mikage duels Utena, the item on all the desks
in the arena is a photograph of himself and Mamiya. Right before
he loses, Mikage has a vision of Mamiya saying to him "You're
going to lose now, sempai." Then, when he looks at the picture, he
sees a totally different boy. It is implied that this is the true
Mamiya and the one Mikage was seeing was only a manifestation.
After the battle and after Mikage leaves, Akio is shown
talking to the boy which we knew as Mamiya, asking him if
he symphathized with Mikage. When he doesn't get an answer,
Akio informs Mamiya that Mikage doesn't exist in the academy anymore.
Then, he adds, "No, he never has from the beginning. Just as you
haven't."
