The Pro-Life View:
The view of pro-lifers is broad an encompasses many different viewpoints. Some believe that abortion is against the will of God and the 10 Commandments, others believe that we simply do not have the right to end a pregnancy. There is one unifying belief held by pro-life advocates, and that is that the fetus or embryo is a child and therefore a life from the moment of conception. It is through this belief that the fetus is a life that the pro-life stance holds firm in that it is illegal to end a life.
According to biologist Dr. Hymie Gordon, Chairman of the Department of Genetics at the Mayo Clinic, "By all the criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception." Religious leaders have come together as a whole to condemn the practice of abortion. Famous charity worker and Catholic nun Mother Teresa of Calcutta has publicly announced her views on the abortion issue. "The greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion, which is war against the child. The mother doesn't learn to love, but kills to solve her own problems. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want."
Abortion is also seen as a form of birth control by many pro-life advocates. They feel that adults and even young people are being sent the wrong message about sexual activity and its consequences. Many feel that abortion encourages unprotected sex or promiscuity because if a baby is conceived, it is relatively easy and hassle-free to get an abortion. Actress Brooke Shields has gone on the record saying, "Too many people use abortion as a form of birth control. And that's very wrong." Giving unwanted children up for adoption is a viable alternative to abortions, to give couples that are unable to have children the chance to raise a child and to have a family.
Personally, I feel that abortion is one of the most nauseating and evil practices that has ever entered the world today. The mere thought that a baby is something that can be killed while helpless in its mother's womb sickens me. Women say that it is their body and they can choose what they do with their body, but I beg to differ. The moment a woman conceives, she is no longer responsible for just her own body, but the body of another life that is too weak to survive without her. Abortion is the epitome of evil and violates the sacred trust between a mother and her child that the mother will do anything she can to save the life of her child. Abortion brings about irresponsibility with sex and birth control, and can not only destroy the life of the child, but the mother as well. Women DO have a right to choose, however, they have a right to choose whether or not to have sex. After that, it's in God's hands, and NOT ours.
