About Headpieces

Eldonrek

The head is a symbol of the mind. The head is a symbol of consciousness. Consciousness is a sort of rhythm, and the rhythm of consciousness defines what we think we are.

Consciousness propels us to fathom the mysteries of the universe. We seek the greatest truths, but the greatest truth is that we can know only ourselves.

We are limited by our own shape, by our own mind. We can know only what our receptacle can contain. And because we can never know truth outside ourselves, we will always be in awe of the mystery.

The four paintings under this category were inspired by Burne Hogarth's anatomy drawings, which I've tried to emulate in new contexts, by letting my own flaws distort his original treatments. Out of respect, I put quotation marks around the heads, which I feel are quotations of Hogarth, and I credit his name in parentheses below my signature.

Basically, that's why the quotation marks first appeared, but then they began to make thematic sense too. The quotation marks now serve as accents on a deeper message, which is: "Everything we say, everything we claim to know by way of logic or observation, everything we think we are, everything we perceive . . . is a quotation of our own limits. We can never get outside our heads."
