Stromatolites are fossilized blue-green algae. The algae cells lived in larg groups that could form floating blankets of goo or long reefs. More often then not, stromatolites will appear as arches, spheres, or domes. Stromatolites were thought to have been extinct until forty years ago. However, with the discovery of modern stromatolites in Shark Bay, Australia, and elsewhere.
