The next morning, when Sydney woke up his first thought was,
"YES!! The day from hell is OVER!" Then he moved and was
gripped with a major headache. He reached over to the night table
and grabbed the pain meds Ohanko left for him. Shaking one out of
the bottle he tossed it back and sipped the water left there. Twenty
minutes later he was feeling much better and got out of bed.
It took a lot of self control not to swear up a storm when his caned
feet hit the floor but he managed it and hobbled to the bathroom. He
looked in the full length mirror on the back of the door. His face was
slightly bruised from the slaps and hits he had taken and he had a
split lip that was just not conducive to smiling. His hand was
bandaged and throbbed and his rump was still tender and sore but
only slightly pink. He looked like he had only had 4 hours sleep.
Okay so the day from hell was not over, it had just gone into
overtime.
Tony had iced his feet most of the night which helped immensely
and, by the time Sydney was out of the shower, he felt much better.
Still he moved quietly so as not to wake Tony. Sydney remember
that he was grounded from the car and, knowing his lover, he really
should not be going to work today. But that was not going to stop
him. Sydney had a great work ethic and unless he was flat out he
was going to go to work. If he had to sneak off well then that is just
what he would do. Better to beg forgiveness than ask permission he
thought.
Tony was not usually a heavy sleeper, but the combination of
everything that had happened the night before and a chugged beer
just before turning in left him in a heavier than usual sleep. Sydney
was able to dress and slip out without waking him.
Sydney knew there would be hell to play later but reasoned he
could deal with it. He always reasoned he could deal with the
consequences when he was vertical. It was when he was horizontal
facing the floor that he remembered that some ideas are bad.
The drive to work was uneventful, other than a muscle twinge that
left him with a charlie horse in his right leg, that made driving
interesting for a few minutes. Once at the school he signed in the
log book and turned to head to class. Ms. Kellogge stopped him.
"Mr. Brookings, are you all right?"
Sydney paused and smiled as best he could. "I'm fine, just had a
little accident."
Ms. Kellogge's eyes were intense on his face for several minutes.
"Very well. Have a good day."
"Yes Ma'am I will." Sydney said and walked off into the hall. A
moment later his cell phone chirped. Sydney glanced at the clock
and flipped it open. "Hello"
"You get your butt home this INSTANT young man!" came the angry
reply.
"I can't do that Tony, I have to work. I will be fine." Sydney tried to
avoid disaster.
"Sydney! You were hurt, your hand injured, kidnapped, your feet
were caned and you got less than two hours sleep. You are NOT
going to be fine." Tony's voice was less than happy.
"Tony, you know I love you but I have to work. There is no one else
who could take the class today. You know how short handed we
are for subs. Please, don't make me come home. I know I am in
trouble but I promise to take it easy today."
"How did you get to work?" Tony asked.
Sydney's stomach did a flip. "I - I drove."
"I see, didn't I ground you from your car for a while?" Tony's voice
was deceptively quiet.
"Yes Sir." Sydney felt his stomach do another flip. The silence on
the phone was very loud.
Finally, Tony said, "Sydney, I am very disappointed in you. You
snuck out of the apartment, and drove your car when you knew you
were not supposed to do so. You have been hurt and yet you still
left."
Sydney was close to tears. "Please don't be angry with me Tony.
Its only half a day today. Please. I promise to come straight home
after work. This is my last day with my kids before their new
teacher comes for them."
"You're to stay off your feet as much as possible and don't even
think of trying to drive home. I will come with Ohanko when he
picks up Jason and drive you home." Tony said sharply. "And don't
even think of being able to sit for a long time little boy."
"Yes Tony, Thank you." Sydney swallowed the fear that welled up.
"Don't cry yet brat." Came the gentle words. "You take care of
yourself and remember always, I love you."
"I love you too Tony." Sydney said and smiled as he rang off.
The day was not terrible, Sydney was able to sit a good deal on the
carpet with the children. He read them stories, and played with the
legos with them. Then when it was time to go, Sydney stood up and
told them that their new teacher would be there on Monday and that
this was his last day with them. They took it better than he did
actually. As he said goodbye to them, several ran over and threw
their arms around him, giving him a tight hug goodbye. Sydney was
close to tears by the time they all had left. He made a mental note
that the next time he subbed for kindergarten he needed to wear a
cup, several heads had collided with his family jewels when they ran
into him.
Two minutes later, Tony walked into the room with Ohanko and
Jason. Sydney gave his lover a tight hug and sat down at his desk.
"I am almost finished then I will be ready to go." He said.
Tony frowned. Sydney looked like hell and was obviously in pain.
"What do you need to do?" He asked gently.
"Just general straightening up, I left lesson plans for the next week
or so for the new teacher. All the copies are made and set up for
her."
"Stay put." Tony ordered as Ohanko took a needle out of his bag.
"No. Please. I don't need a shot, please Ohanko. I have to finish up
here."
"Tony and I can finish up Syddy." Jason said as he began gathering
toys.
"Give me a hip kitten." Ohanko said with the needle in one hand and
an alcohol wipe in the other. Sydney thought of arguing but knew he
couldn't win. He leaned forward and loosened his belt." Ohanko was
quick and efficient. Sydney's hip was only exposed for a moment
before the shot was given then he was covered again.
"That hurt." Sydney pouted.
"Don't go running off when you should be resting and you won't get
painful shots." Ohanko was unsympathetic.
In less than 15 minutes they were out in the car, Ohanko and Tony
whispered together for several minutes before Tony slipped into the
driver's seat and started the engine. "Tony, I am really sorry."
Sydney started.
"Not now kitten, I know you're sorry and you will be sorrier later but,
for right now, lets just get you home and into bed." Tony reached
over and patted Sydney's knee gently.
Once at home, Tony tucked Sydney into bed and sat with him for a
while, one hand rubbed circles on his back until he went to sleep.
Then Tony got to work. By the time Sydney woke up two hours
later, Tony had everything packed.
"Where are we going?" Sydney asked as he was helped out the
door.
"Camping." Tony answered. He assisted Sydney into Ohanko's van
before turning to help Jason with the bags.
"Camping? But I can't make that hike can I?" Sydney was a little
concerned.
"We can drive there kitten. We just don't usually. Don't worry about
it. You just rest." Tony said as he tossed in the last bag.
Sydney felt very guilty as he watched everyone else work but soon
it was done and off they went.
The next stop was as Damalis' house where he and Iggy came out.
Again Sydney just sat there while everyone else loaded the van.
"You know I can help." Sydney pouted.
"Don't pout kitten. You can do all the dishes at the camp." Ohanko
teased.
"Gee thanks." Sydney whined.
"Anytime kitten." Ohanko grinned wickedly as he got back behind
the wheel.
To be continued.
