Thursday. The day before leaving for the con. Also
known as Panic Day, as no single costume was finished (as
usual),
leaving us to complete A20, Sora, and BT (all from
.hack//SIGN). I must say right now, though, that my costume
was mostly completed (BT) and needed just a few small pieces, which
is definitely a first. A20 was near completion, needing some
ironing and whatnot. BUT Sunny's costume, once again....was hardly
even started. He refuses to do the sewing... leaving it to my
"expertise". I honestly didn't have a clue how to
sew the poofy ninja suit (well, I had an idea for the pants, but
that top...I HATE shoulder things), so I was putting it off. (Okay,
let's analyze this, my skill/knowledge level is far lower than hers,
so how does it make any sense for me to do something she doesn't
know how to do?) **It's called "gaining experience" and
"beginners luck" and "new ideas" ** We had
enough time between cons to have him sew, but I can honestly say
that I was monopolizing his time. Back to the report.
Pants turned out well, actually. Even if it was getting really late
by this time. People were over, working on weapons. Sunny
worked on his, as I was sewing (they turned out amazing, BTW), so
everyone was being productive and making progress. That was, at
least, until I stepped on a nail, IN MY APARTMENT, sometime after
midnight.
See, my housemate had an IKEA bed with the wrong supports, and
left the old ones lying in the hall, nails UP. She had stepped on
one of the nails earlier, although I doubt as badly as I did. (I
love how they didn't get moved even after that happened) **I
didn't know where to move them to, I didn't know what she wanted to
do with them** The pain didn't hit me right away, and I was
fine until about 3 am, when I couldn't stand on it at all anymore.
In the meantime, though, Sora shirt got sewn, and A20 finished, and
I still had a few things of BT's to complete, which I finally
finished at 6 that morning.
Also around 3, the first instance of "Sunny almost losing
it" occurred. See, the weapons were crafted out of foam core
and the plan was to cover them with this plaster stuff to smooth out
the edges. The package says the stuff dries in half an hour. After
letting it sit for almost an hour, I turned it over to work on the
other side only to hear the plaster fall off as slop. I was ready to
chuck them out Eleryth's second story windows (as they have no
screens) (No, I was ready to go through the glass). Since that
is probably a bad idea, I decided to leave for half an hour for a
walk. Good choice on my part. Came back and went with the paper maché.
Left that to our volunteer assistant.
As the night slowly became day, things came together. BT was
complete, A20 was complete, and Sora, well, Sora had everything but
the weapons and purple stripes complete. We figured we'd do
that in the hotel room, and got ready to get the van from the rental
place. I had called them and told them I'd be coming as soon as
possible, which means 7am. We left around 7:10, with the assistant
in tow, as her house was on the way. We got there, then had to
wait for the person before us to rent, and then, as I should have
guessed, for our van, as it too, wasn't ready. It was getting
cleaned, and was still dirty in places when we got it. Wasn't nice,
but we were in a hurry. Sunny drove, as I could hardly walk -
was quite the sight to see, I imagine. (It was)
I hate limping. We got the van loaded with Louie's help, and left to
get everyone else. It was now about 9:30 am.
Here's the second instance of "Sunny
almost losing it". We left the van parked next to Eleryth's
apartment figuring we'd be leaving again really soon. That wasn't
the case. When we did, guess what we found on the windshield? A
parking ticket. Apparently you can't park where we did between 9 and
10.
Ok, so we're on the road. Poor Sunny has to drive with the rest
of us sleeping. I wake up about an hour and half into our
trip, to his insistent question: "You packed my weapons,
right?" Note that there was panic in his voice. I didn't, but
as Louise had to pack her big sword, I assumed she'd grab the
weapons which were lying next to it, also drying from paper maché.
I woke her up from the back of the van, and she answered. Disaster
had struck again - ("Sunny almost losing
it" three -- while driving!) the weapons were still on
my apartment floor, 1.5 hours away. We quickly debated about
turning around then, which in my opinion would have been better, but
we ended up going all the way to the hotel in Toronto, another 1.5
hours away. (I didn't want other people to
miss out on the weekend because of my mistake. Only regret is
Eleryth had to come back with me. Feel bad for making her miss the
entire first day.) Trust me, I felt bad enough for not
checking the apartment. Sadly, this was not the only thing
forgotten.
Fastforward to Sunny's and my return to T.O., with weapons, and
exclamations of elation from those who hadn't seen us at all
"You're not dead!" But in reality, I think (in
retrospect) they were thinking: "Oh God, 2 MORE people to fit
in that room?"
You see, the room we ended up with was
smaller than my bedroom. Not that most have you have seen my
bedroom. Anyway, two single beds and some floor space. And by
"some", I mean "next to none". TIIIIIIIIIIIIIINY.
Ended up with each bed (or mini-bed-of-molestation as they were
known) getting two people ("Alright" ala Quagmire, Family
Guy), and two on the floor. Can we say cozy? (see
Stillvisions Con report for pics)
After feeling claustrophobic for a while, Oselle took us out to
the hall for what was possibly the best part of the day - learning
the dance (Village People style, choreographed by Oselle) for the
skit! This went well, and was a lot of fun, even if it was
midnight and very few of us had had any sleep. The fun dancing
was followed by Sunny and Eleryth staying up until 4 am hand-sewing
purple stripes on Sora while everyone else slept. We
eventually crashed, and slept like logs until the alarm went off at
9am.
