Washago Garden Club
Pot Luck Dinner & Meeting – May 12, 2008
Meeting held at the Lake St. George Community Hall: 4:30 PM
Present: Dorn Johnston, Donna Denier, Marilyn Tucker (taking membership dues), Donna Malloy

  • Remind Nancy & Carol about telling everyone to bring wine for the dinners if they like

  • Raffle 3 for $2 went well – definitely a do-again – raised $48.00

  • 6:30 - Dorn introduced EGOS gardens – Katie Miller, head grower and plant manager; she gave a wonderful presentation www.egosgardencentre.com

  • Flossie was present at 100 years old – she will proudly be on our Canada Day Float this year

  • START THE NEXT MEETING BEFORE THE DINNER SO YOU CATCH EVERYBODY – start at 4:00!!

  • Send notice to Soulvine that we are having a float in the Canada Day Parade – also perhaps send a note about our meeting and perhaps a picture of Flossie

  • Workshop at Fern Forest - $8.00 per bag; sun or shade – will have 24 bags in total

  • Plant sale next Saturday at Carol Sharpe’s: 3354 Muskoka Street – start sale @ 9:00 drop off plants at 8:00 am or day before – Dorn will bring popsicle sticks for pricing

  • Volunteers to adopt a tree plot in town to look after all year: those volunteering to tend the plants are: Heather & Donna, Marion & Dick, Boyd & Barb Smith, Pat & Dave Warwick, Arline & Ben Hughes, Glenis Hepenstall and Carol Sharpe

  • Jim Denier will be driving his red ATV for the Canada Day parade this year again

  • Dorn will be getting the tickets out for the garden tour shortly

  • Re gardens around signs going into town… put your name on the volunteer list and we’ll call when we are ready to plant

  • Watering the gardens – Harold is going to hook up the water tap

  • Treasurer’s report – Marilyn – September 2007: Balance 2568.00. Now (May, 2008): 234.00 tonight – 155.29 in petty cash. 3861.48 in bank.

  • Dorn has the gardening plans for the community centre. Proposed cost for plans: 300.00.

  • Email Anita Jarrett re drought resistant plants and dry/wet ditch planting.

  • Heather talked about website any suggestions are welcomed.

  • 175th anniversary of the Trent Severn Waterway Art on the Severn art festival (website) main street could use some sprucing up lilac trees have been planted on the main street but some have not done well. Should be planted, not potted. Ground cover (but it won¡t fill in during one year). Plots left about 4. Plots have been let go weeds, etc. Only first block has concrete squares where there are things planted.

  • Need garbage containers... Dorn speaking to Frank (our councillor). Gout weed? Chameleon? Thyme? Bring ideas to next meeting. Put an annual in with the perennial to start with so you have growth right off the bat.

  • Garden Tour: same weekend as Art on the Severn July 19, 2008. All in favour YES. Need gardens. Last year we had 8. Committee for garden tour needed.. volunteers were Carol MacInnis, Cathy Nickolson, Dorn Johnston & Barb Smith. Proceeds go to the Community Centre Gardens put to the members. YES.
  • Community Gardens. Some perennials from our members. $802.00 proceeds from last year¡s Garden Tour. Cookies under the canopy and at each of the gardens.

  • Re Washago signs that we were asked to plant, soil that was brought in was full of weeds. Boyd and Harold went to Timber Mart and they tackled the dirt with weed eaters. Then they put the tarps down and covered with mulch. Town is paying for plants. Make pockets in the tarps and plant right into the holes. The gardens are WAY too big and need to be made smaller. No water need to be drought resistant. Speak to Fern Forest re plants for gardens. She would do a workshop on the bagged¡¨ plants. (Website) Need to know pricing. One garden per day for 2 days. Need guys for lifting rocks and ladies for planting. Anybody have some rocks? First week in June? Do up a sheet for volunteers Donna to be passed around at the pot luck.

  • Main gardens worked well last year when we had set dates for working on gardens. Do a schedule calendar! Norm will do more pruning in June.

  • Planter boxes with a bench for the main street, guys?? Pat Warwick volunteered to have one in front of her place. How about one by the Gardens? Approach Rotary or Lions Club for donations re benches.

  • Jane suggested that on the property by the corner by the Log Cabin plant trees and put benches for picnic area.

  • Cathy mentioned banners for the main street. Program in Orillia (Festival of Banners) involves anybody doing banners and the banners are juried. 6-8 banners made for the main street ¡school kids involved. Have to get permission to hang them on utility poles. What materials to use for the flag/banner? Talk more at the Pot Luck.

  • Pot Luck Monday May 12, 2008. Dorn will cook all the meat. Need someone to call because Nancy won¡t be home. Pat Warwick will call with Carol. (send Pat the list) Callers will ask what people are bringing. Kristen Ego to come to speak¡Dorn will call her.

  • Dues will be collected at the Pot Luck: $6.00/person, $10.00/couple.

  • Art on the Severn is looking for billets for artists for the 18th and 19th of July.

  • Talked about possibly getting a Landscape Gardener to come to the Community Centre to work out a plan ¡V cost to be applied to purchases ¡V planters would work best because of the entrance being right at the rink perimeter

  • Corn roast everyone to bring their own dishes, cutlery, etc & chairs Carol will bring tomatoes and onions from her garden for the burgers and dogs
  • Al Soper said he would water gardens but Tom & Marilyn Tuckers have been doing it

  • Cannas and Daylilies have to be dug in the fall and put into a bag and labelled ¡V Norm Rockall will keep them over the winter
  • Heather McIlravey has offered the Lake St. George Dart hall for free for any future meetings or dinners

  • Asked for volunteers to work on a regular basis on the Gardens in town during the summer Need people for 2 work days: May 17, 9:00 AM ¡V compost day ¡V hot dogs & cold drinks provided: May 28, 9:00 ¡V mulch day Cathy Nickolson, lead gardener, will be away this summer¡K she needs a replacement to tend her garden
  • Plant sale ¡V long weekend in May ¡V St. Pauls ¡V Saturday, May 19th ¡V sell perennials (in pots) ¡V Marilyn Tucker & Carol Sharpe will help
  • Garden tour ¡V proceeds to go to Community Centre¡¦s new gardens (landscaping) - $8.00/person ¡V July 14th

  • A sheet of paper was sent around so volunteers could sign up for tending gardens.

  • Amend membership list and email to Carol and Carol for phoning re Pot Luck on May 7th. Potluck: 4:30 PM (we get there 4:00 to set up). Quick meeting before dinner and after speaker is finished. Everyone brings plate and utensils and mug, glass, napkin to save on cleanup. Speaker for Pot Luck: Kristin McPhail ¡V EGOS Garden Centre - http://www.egosgardencentre.com/,/li> ,li>Kristin will be bringing perennials for sale and will tell us all about them. There will be a perennial on each table and one of the members will be able to take it home.
  • We will pay Kristin $25.00. Dorn will introduce her and Carol MacInnes will thank her. Dorn will ask her to bring the plants for the give away.
  • Dorn will make a pork roast and chicken legs and everyone called will bring something to contribute to the potluck.
  • Meeting to cover: 2 work days, May 14 and May 28. First for compost and second for mulch. We will ask for volunteers. There will be a BBQ and hot dogs will be offered to the workers. Dorn will ask her son-in-law if we could use their washrooms. Cathy needs someone to take over her garden. Carol has 2 helpers for hers.
  • Dorn will ask Frank Coyle for water hook-up ¡V activate the tap that is on site. Will ask for anyone who lives nearby to water the gardens and grass once a week.
  • We need a social committee who will take care of coffee, tea, etc. for meetings. Carol MacInnes volunteered and she will find a couple of helpers.
  • Donna Molloy is taking over the rose garden.
  • Pat & Glenys will look after planting the containers.
  • Carol Sharpe will decide what she wants for her garden (railway tie??) - funds are available.
  • Plant sale at St. Paul¡¦s on May 19th ¡V be there at 9:00 AM. Charge $1, $2, and $3 per pot¡K. exact pricing to be decided that day.
  • Will ask for volunteers for Canada Day parade at Pot Luck

  • Garden Tour ¡V July 14th (rain date July 21st). Possible gardens: Sylvia Lak, Dorn, Peter, Carol Sharpe. Dorn will be called two others, Donna will call Kim & John (Donor Drive).

  • Cathy told us about the Festival of Banners in Orillia. http://www.festivalofbanners.ca/ It is sponsored by the Zephyr Art Gallery, a not for profit gallery in Orillia. Opening ceremony Friday, May 25, 2007.
