Physical description: Max is 5'9" and has long brown hair and greyish-green eyes. He has several scars from his time as a mercenary, including a nasty looking one from a gut wound on his right side.

Max comes from one of the "old" Thaumatur families. He was the only Sansorce in his family, and was not treated well by them growing up. His mother was cold and distant and his father was abusive. He had two younger siblings, twins who he had very little to do with. He soon learned to treat his family with about the same amount of respect they treated him, and knew he was little more than a nuisance.
After high school, he started to attend Wellington Academy, and it became something of a sanctuary for him. He enjoyed the classes and his friends there, including his roommate, Leoder Kurrmond. He spent all of his time there, rarely returning home. Had he stayed for the full four years, he probably would have excelled very well. However, not long after he started school at Wellington he met Anastasia LeFay, and he and the Thaumatur young lady struck up a secret relationship. He was head over heels for her before he knew it, but had to face up to reality when his younger brother found out about them and told his parents two years before his graduation from Wellington. After they had a long talk with them, he realized Anastasia's reputation was at stake and if she stayed with him she would have to give up her life as a Thaumatur. Partly out of a fear that she would chose her magic over him, and partly out of a desire to keep from causing her problems, he decided to run away. He left Anastasia, Wellington, and Salaise and started traveling around the globe as a mercenary. Unfortunately, what he didn't realize was that Anastasia was pregnant when he left, and she later gave birth to twins, Alistair and Adrien.
He continued to work as a mercenary for almost 25 years in which he would maintain that he just wasted it away. That's mostly true. He moved from place to place with a boxful of his things from Salaise, his car, and his clothes and not much else. He stayed in hotels or furnished apartments and his life pretty much consisted of working and sleep.
Then he heard about a hit out on Anna. Without thinking about it, he decided to go back and protect her by finding out who had issued the hit and stopping them. When he made his way to Alchaven to find the person and tell them he wanted to take the job, he met up with a friend of his old roommate, Leoder, who had used the bogus hit to lure him back. She enlisted his help to break Leoder out of jail in Salaise. Because of Leoder he found out about his sons, and met both of them as well. He also saw Anastasia again. He was not surprised to find that all three were angry at him, but wasn't happy about it. He decided to stay in Salaise to try to atone for his past.
At one point when Alistair was out of power, he served shortly as a teacher at Wellington, and as an officer in the army, but when Alistair was put back in charge, he was relieved of those duties. Despite Alistair trying to get him out of the country, he has since lived an isolated existence in his small apartment in Violesang, except for the occasional, unsuccessful attempt to locate Anna.
He's always been a bit cynical and bitter, though he tries to put on a cheerful (though somewhat sarcastic) front. He usually comes off as a bit of a joker. However, the older he's gotten, the more serious he's become. He's pretty hard on himself for his mistakes in his past, and lately he's just become something of a recluse.
"It's easier to forgive a murderer than the one you love. Or maybe that's just because I'm an ass. Oh, yeah, that's right. My mistake."

Case notes: I think if there was anyone's story I could change, it would be Max's. It depresses him, and it depresses me too to know how much he regrets it. I guess part of what's so hard about his story, is in the New Haven universe he had it all. You know, wife, kids, a life. And he was happy there too. Most of the time. So to go from that reality, to a reality where he's lost all of that is just not easy. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if he had just moved on, but he hasn't. I don't think he even knows how. It's kind of weird working with a character who doesn't seem to have any future at all. I just hope something changes with him sooner or later.

Psst: When he was a teenager he was a bit wild, you know, what with the drinking and . . . I would say girls, but after he met Anna, she was the only girl so . . . but yes, he was a little wild. Which actually continued for a while on an even worse scale after he left Salaise. However, after a nearly deadly encounter with a woman while he was drunk, he all but swore off both females and alcohol. That's one of the big changes between the kid he was when he left Wellington and the guy he is now. It's also a visible change in some ways. Anyone who walked into his apartment would find it very, very empty, (not even messy, besides maybe a stray pizza box) since he doesn't carry many possessions with him, and completely devoid of alcohol. That's something that just wouldn't have been true of the old Max at all.

Theme Song

17
By: Cross Canadian Ragweed

Sirens wail and a flashin' light
Nothin' better to do on a Tuesday night
But give me hell
"Where you headed, what are you out for?"
We don't see much of you 'round here anymore
I guess it's just as well
Once upon a time you had it all
You let everybody down
You're always 17 in your hometown

CHORUS
Runnin' from your folks
Runnin' from the law
Runnin' from love
Runnin' from your fears
Runnin' from it all
You keep on runnin' boy,
You'll run yourself in the ground
You're always 17 in your hometown

Her porch swing still looks the same
She probably won't even remember my name
Just like she didn't back then
Is she married? Is she doin' fine?
Does she know about all the nights
I laid awake cryin' just to know her hand?
The door opens and I run away
Just like the same old clown
You're always 17 in your hometown

CHORUS

Nobody is gonna miss me
No tears will fall, No one's gonna weep
When I hit that road
My boots are broken, my brain is sore
From keepin' up with their little world
I got a heavy load
Gonna leave 'em all just like before
I'm big city bound
You're always 17 in your hometown

CHORUS

You're always 17
Yeah you're always 17
You're always 17 in your hometown

Check it out, man! Can you top this, mortal?

Yep. You're a vampire. That comes with immortality, the ability to manipulate shadows into kickass weaponry, and an annoying teenage girl for whom you'll do almost anything. Well, you're strong, cool, funny, and... whipped by a human girl.
