This tank is a brackish tank with a
salinity of 1.004. I use Reef Crystals salt mix. The tank gets about
a 50% water change ever other week and gravel cleaning. At that time
I add liquid fertilizer. I use Florapride.
The filter for this tank had to be
a submersible, because of the water line being about 5" from
the top. I narrowed it down to two filters, the Fluval and a Duetto
filter. I chose the Duetto DJ50. The reason for my choosing this filter
was because it had a prefilter, a bacterial spong, and a small place
to put carbon. The Fluval only had a sponge. I actually cut some of
the sponge in the Duetto Filter and placed ceramic beads for bacteria
to grow on in the filter. I'm going to try to turn the filter to the
vertical position. Right now it is horizonal (you can see it on the
right hand side of the tank picture above). The intake for the filter
this way is about 4" from the bottom of the tank. When I turn
the filter vertical the intake will be just above the bottom of the
tank. The reason for this is because the crabs are extremely dirty.
I'm hoping that when I turn the filter, it will do a better job with
the crabs waste. I did turn the filter and it does do a better job
with the waste removal from the crabs. I have also started to clean
the filter every water change instead of every other.
I have found out the crabs will eat
some plants. I placed a small amount of Java Moss, Corkscrew Vallisneria,
Duckweed, and Brazilian Waterweed in the tank. All which were eaten
by the crabs. I have some Java Fern and Cryptocoryne Wendtii which
the crabs have not touched yet.
The critters in this tank are 2 Red
Claw Crabs and 4 Bumble Bee Gobies.
