hentai

If you look on my main page, you'll notice I'm a member of hentaiFREEfree. This has nothing to do with enjoying pornography-I don't. (Not to mention the fact that I'm fourteen...) So why would I join an organization that supports porn? Because people have the right to choose for themselves what they want to see. I'm an avid supporter of free expression of all kinds. I think it's incredibly hypocritical for me to support something such as the "Sensation" exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum* but look down on hentai. I don't like it, but it isn't my right to choose for other people.

In addition, hentaiFREEfree isn't just a hentai supporter, it's against the specific hentaiFREE campaign. HentaiFREE says they are people "with a sense of morals and decency" and groups those who enjoy pornography with serial killers. While they have since revised their mission statement, they still hold themselves above all those who like porn. Not everyone who doesn't like porn is a wonderful person. In fact, I believe there are many serial kilers who didn't watch porn. Does that make them better than Ted Bundy?

hentaiFREE also makes it very unclear what they consider pornography. They say series containing sex or tasteful nudity are not neccesarily porn, but they never explain their standards. Even if I didn't support hentaiFREEfree, I wouldn't belong to hentaiFREE because it is impossible to agree with them if they don't state what they consider hentai.

Lastly, I don't think hentaiFREE really does anything. It is very rare to "stumble" upon hentai-most sites have a warning page or even charge admittance. I have never once been in a page containing hentai, because the few times I unknowingly clicked on a hentai page link, I got a splash page saying what the site had in it. So what's the purpose of hentaiFREE, if the sites they're against do the job of warning people for themselves? The hentaiFREE banner isn't even always on the main page of a site, which defeats the purpose of proclaiming oneself to be safe for children. Concerned parents can also use programs which block porn sites-all hentaiFREE does is proclaim that it dislikes the stuff. What's their point?

*For those who don't know, there was a recent (when I wrote this) scandal over a painting displayed in the Brooklyn Museum of the Virgin Mary which used elephant dung to make one of her breasts and had pornographic pictures around it. The painting was part of a special exhibit called "Sensation", of modern British artists. Christian groups protested and Mayor Guiliani threatened to stop funding the museum. It didn't happen. :)
