Fanfiction

The anime/manga series Ranma 1/2 caught my attention when I first saw it in late 2002 for its humor and martial arts. Over the course of a few weeks, I scoured the web for more information about it, rented and watched the first two seasons, and in general gorged on Ranma. In the course of that, I came across fanfiction, and have followed Ranma fanfiction ever since.

Although I really enjoy the humor aspects of the original series, the fanfiction that tends to stick in my mind is 'dark' (focusing on tragedy, or exposing unpleasant realities in the situation). In part, I think this is because the series has some very unpleasant aspects that go unconfronted in canon (and, also, there's only so many stupid martial arts one can take).

The anime is a gender comedy with strong romantic overtones, but really, it's set atop one of the most depressing situations you can imagine. The main character has spent years on a training trip for martial arts, with resulting poor social skills and overly developed fixation on martial arts; is initially unaware of his mother, and then forced to hide from her for fear of death; is affianced to several girls, who will suffer if he does not choose them for marriage; and disliked for their attentions by his rivals (who seem to be his closest to friends). His primary fiancee is violent, but was under threat of attack (and likely rape); his childhood friend was forced to discard her gender and spend her entire childhood preparing to kill him; and the Chinese amazon is obligated by her laws to return with him as a husband.

So I like dark fiction. I also have a weakness for long stories, as I can read quickly enough that short stories don't last long enough. I am weakly pro-Akane (I think that is the way the series went, so a fanfic that chooses another partner has a heavier burden to convince me that it's likely). And that should indicate I prefer continuations to divergences or alternate universes. Themes I enjoy are redemption of Genma or Happosai, and interactions between Nodoka and Ranko. A pet peeve of mine is authors who have a horrible grasp of social dynamics (for example, ostensibly socially skilled people deciding on 5th-grade tactics to resolve a conflict). Not every character is socially skilled, but those that are, should show it.

I've started a listing of particular stories, authors, or archives that I think are worth reading; since I am relatively inexperienced in the Ranma-verse, I am including those stories I personally think are great, and those that I think have some novel aspect. Still, I also include a description of why I'm including the site; I will try to note any caveats I have with the stories. I don't intend to be as comprehensive as Rakhal, but I seem to like a lot of fics

I don't know how often I'll check these links; I am beginning this list in late 2002; hopefully these links will be working for a while. If you do find a link that is not working, please contact me via email at elisteran@hotmail.com so I can remove or update the link.

A Panda's Dream

Evocative piece, where Ranma is stuck as a girl, and her father as a Panda. She does not tell anybody this, but comes to live with the Tendos, a depressed and shy girl with a surprisingly intelligent panda. Slowly Akane and she build a relationship. This is great writing for what it doesn't say as what it does say. Part 2 is here, Part 3 is here, and lastly Part 4 is here.

Addicted to Love

This is a non-serious story that ends with Ranma marrying 6 girls (but not Kodachi =). There are some lemon chapters, but they're marked and summarized so you can skip them if you want to.

Alan Harnum

Waters under Earth is perhaps the most epic Ranma fanfic I've read; a good read, although a bit long and at the end wanders into prose too mythological for my taste. He's also written Dies Irae, which addresses post-manga Saffron, Gardens of Proserpine where we learn that a martial artist is not bullet-proof, Simulacrum which addresses how the Akaneichuan was formed when somehow Akane seemed to have survived and come back to Nerima after the Saffron incident.

Arianna Vesle

A number of WAFFish celebrations of Ranma and AKane

Bailesu's Apartment

John Biles is famous as a fanfic writer; he's got some good stories. One thing to look out for is his silly DC/Anime fusions

Becka's Fanfiction

Becka/SilvVenom has written some darker pieces; a little too much angst-glorification, but You'll See is a fic designed for one purpose: to kill Ranma as many ways as possible.

Björn Christianson http://www.its.caltech.edu/~bjorn/fanfic/index.html Funny stories. One Fine Day describes what starts off as a very nice day in Ranma's life; Across Honor is a very funny Ranma/Excel Saga cross (featuring the art of East Uruguayan School ofDon't-Hold-On Grenade-Jutsu!); A New Technique has Ranma determined to learn Akane's resurrection technique; and more!
Black Dragon

A variety of cross-overs; in particular, I recommend Supernova (Ranma's a space pirate? This has very little connection to the series, other than the character of Ranma himself); and Nexus, which has Ranma and two adopted brothers fighting demons as they come to Nerima.

Blonde 1/2

Not tremendously faithful characterization-wise, but it's a funny look at a Ranma that (in female form) is absolutely irresistible to men. The Nabiki/Ranma one-up-manship is inspired.

Bloody Paintbrush

A number of crossovers with NGE and Gold Diggers; also, a Ranma is the son of James Bond story! Legionnaires has a number of anime characters who've joined the French Foreign Legion; Ranko Foret is there, apparently stuck as a female. This looks promising, but is very incomplete.

Bob Lobster

Hell Hath No Fury is a very amusing story of how Ranma might have gotten along with Sailor V, were he to have run into her while they were both in England. (Hint: his big mouth was not a recent development). Strange Bedfellows is a slow, dramatic look at one brief stopover Ranma might have done while he was searching for Herb and the Chiisuton.

Brian Randall

The story Compass Points has a great beginning: Akane tries to learn the Soul of Ice, and it gets out of control. To save her, to save others, Ranma embraces the Ice himself. I think the ending loses focus, but so it goes.

This has some connection to this page; I'm not sure which is the favored address.

Brian has also written MissFortune, describing one possible world where Ryouga managed to latch Akane with the koi fishing rod. Dark, depressing. But it ends up an up note.

His latest is Diamonds in the Rough, a Ranma/Love Hina/Golden Boy crossover. Ranma has taken off on his own, to develop with the Golden Boy a purer form of Anything Goes. Emulating his older brother, he wants to get into a university, so ends up staying at the Hinata Sou to get some study time in!

Can't Let Go

A darkfic look at the Ranmaverse. (I'm not sure how believable the characterization is, but it manages to reinterpret almost every character in the cast. And it's ending is downright beautiful in a horrible, horrible way). But I want a sequel where all is outed, darnit!

Basically, Ukyo's rapid conversion from vengeful demon to cute fiancee was a bit sudden. What if it was part of a deeper plan? Ranma ends up being fooled, and he pays a price. And he never gets a refund (even at the end, from his 'friends'...)

Careful Destiny

Light-hearted tale of Ranma making a wish and being transported to another world. In this world, he is uncursed, but has a sister Ranko, and does not know Akane. When he tries to pursue her, he finds that Kuno is a lot more dangerous than before (both physically and otherwise). It's serious, but not dark.

DB Sommer

D.B. Sommer is the author of my favorite Ranma fic, Avenging (as you might guess, this is a fusion with the Avengers of the Marvel comic universe). He's also written Shampoo 1/2, and the lemon Sextacular.

Dave Harper

An Akane to Forget is funny. Ranma Ichibunnoni is about Ranma and his twin sister Ranko, and how they come into the Tendo's lives after Jusenkyo, before they find a genie...

Dead Butch

Still in progress; but very nicely done in smart-mouth first person form. It doesn't go into many details yet, but it seems that Ranma, Mousse, and Ryouga were stuck in their cursed forms from the Herb/Musk Dynasty story. Ranma and Ryouga have become wanderers (not together, but they run into each other). Oh, and they may be immortal. The 2 chapters done so far have Ranma fighting Konatsu's family at the Kunoichi tea shop to save Ryouga from being lunch.

Dew on the Grass

This is a bright, optimistic Ryouga/Ranko and Ranma/Akane story. It's interesting, and avoids the lime aspects =)

Do You Remember?

17 years have passed since Ranma married someone not of the Nerima wrecking crew. Why? It turns out he did it because Shampoo, Mousse, and his father (!) threatened to kill Akane did he not; to save her, he breaks up with her in the cruelest way possible. Now, Soun is dying, and he ends up bringing Ranma and Akane to confront each other... Ranma in his unhappy marriage, and Akane with her 17-year-old son... This has some real depressing elements, but overall ends on a happy note. (I don't think Mousse, Shampoo, or Genma get what they deserve, though )

Donny's Fanfic archive

Some nice Christmas stories. Also, Defending her Majesty, an amusing look at an exhausting day in King Endymion's life in the future of the Sailor Moon universe.

Douglas MacDougall

No commentary.

Drakensis

I recommend Lost Innocence by Thrythlind; it takes the usual scenario of someone taking advantage of Ranma, but the interesting part is in the after-effects in school, community, and the other cast members. (And Nabiki shows empathy for Ranma's situation). Saotome's Choice has a nice look of Ranma (as Ranko) going to live with his mother.

Dynasty

Nice epic story with some comedy. Unfinished at 13 chapters, but the author has promised (come hell or high water) that it will eventually get finished. Quick summary: there's a mysterious clan who need to take care of the Jusenkyo-cursed people for their ultimate success. Direct confrontations don't work, but they point the Wrecking Crew towards a cave that sort-of cures them all... but sort-of screws up their lives even more.

Edward Simons

This has a number of good stories, mostly focusing on Ukyo. The Lonely Sea has Ukyo return to the sea where she trained after the failed wedding; Ranma pursues. Mamono Hunter Ukyou does exactly what you'd expect, but is very well written (and pretty long). It actually has psychological interpretations of the characters that make sense of a lot of the 'inexplicable' actions in the series.

Emily's Ranma Fanfics

Short, WAFFy pieces. Also has some nice teasers, like Of Cabbages and Kings, an AU where Ranma and Akane meet in college.

FireWind's fanfiction

Here's a Ryouga sympathizer. Hearts of Glass is a divergence exploring Ryoga's emotional state (hint: not healthy), and what lies in his past that made him that way. Bitter has Akane discover Ryouga is P-chan, and takes a horrific view at the consequences.

Fire

Vengeance and a Half is a Ranma/SM crossover where tragedy strikes and the good forces of the city are split into vengeful parties. It becomes Nerima vs the Sailors vs everybody else. 8 of a planned 9 parts are currently done, although I'd expect it to go on for more, given the unresolved plot threads. Another unfinished story is Hated, which has Ranma banished to another timeline where the Saotomes are assassins, who've alienated everyone in Nerima. Lastly, there's Kind Angel's Thesis, my favorite Ranma/NGE crossover. It's a funny fusion (although with some dark elements) where Ranma ends up sharing Rei's body.

Fubar Inc

Here be a number of good stories. Youma 1/2 is a pretty short SM/Ranma crossover that felt like it was trying to be serious and all, but felt to me really light; The Bat,The Bird,The Horse, and the Tomboy is (incomplete; 2.5 chapters) a Ranma/Batman+Superman animated series crossover that looks very promising (because it's based on the animated series, they avoid the powerscale difference that would result in Ranma+(esp Silver Age) comics character; also pretty light-hearted).

Furinkan.net

A number of good stories (some lemon content). Watch for Ranma's Apartment (Ranma moves to an apartment complex; some cameo appearances by Ah! My Goddess characters, but mainly it's Ranma gets a chance to leave chaos behind), and newRanma, where Ranma's libido is restored after brain surgery is needed following a head injury. There's also The Clan, where Nodoka turns out to be a vampire, which offends Ranma's sensibilities, as he goes his own way in the world to stomp on demons (absolutely awesome fight sequences).

Gary Kleppe

Gary Kleppe is a co-moderator of the Fan Fiction Mailing List, so you'd think he knows something about fanfics. Well, he does... very good stuff here, including I Dream of Ranma ( Ranma becomes a Genie) and A Peaceful Life, a bittersweet (no, depressing) story of how Ranma's life might be more peaceful if he hadn't been engaged to Akane at the beginning.

Ginrai

The Day the Dogs Won - Kuno gets Akane! And this is all Urd's fault! There's also Crossing the Line, where Ukyo is determined to be Burakumin (incomplete, sadly), the humorous Sizing things up, Sailor (just getting involved with the Sailor Senshi doesn't actually help Ranma any), and All Purpose Jusenkyo Girl Nuku Nuku is about Ranma's pet who was with him at Jusenkyo.

Gregg Sharp

Gregg was the originator of The Bet, an idea which grew and multiplied across fanfics; basically, it provided a system for divergences. Notable ones are Study in Scarlet, where an ultra-scary Akane from the future comes back to her love Ranma (and scares him off), Wild Horses & Pokegirls has Ranma trapped in a very dark pokemon-like universe, and some more. Mostly humor, although he also has an annoying SI character (worth checking out a little bit, but still annoying). Also notable is Nabiki Screws Up (aka Curry), Young at Heart (Ranma doesn't get old after the youth mushrooms).

Thinking about it, I think Gregg is metroanime (mentiond elsewhere).

HKMiller

Simple humor one-shots. The best of them is Akane's a Mutant? Oh no!.

Illumination

Darkfic by Freemange about the Illuminati having set up Ranma and the Nerima group for suffering.

James Hunt

Unexpected Results(8 chapters completed) starts telling of what would happen if Ryoga and Ranma were slipped a potion by Shampoo and the obvious happens. And Ranma gets pregnant. It's been done before, but this is good writing, and semi-believable characterization. Sadly it is not yet to the point that many people are aware of the situation; in particular, the Tendos don't know.

Also at this address is 'Darkness and Light', a darkfic where Genma turns out to be much worse than people had thought.

Jamie Wild

The Saotome Gambit

Jason Wong

Way of the Ninjitsu has Ranma being raised by a ninja clan rather than Genma. There's sharp escalation of his abilities, but his trainers have surprises for him, so it's still interesting. Currently there are 8 chapters, and he's graduated from training and about to head to Nerima. He's also written Fate of Love, which is a Ranma/SM crossover; the most intriguing part of the story is it describes a capable fighter back on Mars and how he managed to get entangled in the then princess's life.

Jeremy Harper

Some interesting novel crossovers. The best is the short (incomplete, only one chapter done) Anamolies, which crosses The Matrix: Reloaded with Ranma. Ranma is a program in the system, whom the Merovingian tries to convince should go after Neo, because otherwise he'll destroy the Matrix (including all of them, but in particular, Akane). An odd premise, but it looks very promising.

Jose Argao

This has 'A Time For Wild Horses', which is a traditional Urd is behind Ranma's love troubles, as she seeks the perfect fiancee. I had thought this was amusing, but now that I've got more experience reading fanfics where authors make the oddest matchups for no reason, it's lost some of its charm.

Joseph Kohle's Fanfiction Page

No commentary.

Kai's Vortex

Kai has written an interesting PokeGirl (Ranma 1/2: Whole New World) story, and a few amusing spamfics. Also hosts The Butterfly Effect

Kent Hyam

A few stories here; nothing special. Taste of Blood is a funny look at when Akane thinks Ryouga is a vampire; most noteworthy is his estimates of character heights. (He thinks Ranma's female form is ~4'10")

Krista Parry

Great author; her Hearts of Ice seems to be almost unanimously acclaimed as setting a high bar for continuations. In this, Ranma gives his life for Akane very early on, but that doesn't stop anybody.... The conclusion is not yet written; it ends on a very frustrating cliffhanger. She is going back and rewriting it from the beginning, though, to revise and fix up, so there's hope it will get finished someday.

Learning Curve

Ryouga gives up on his Akane obsession early on, and becomes a lot more capable fighter as a result. This has an absolutely incredible fight between Ranma and Ryouga halfway through, which by all rights should be the climax. I actually stopped reading there, since it seemed to take a step down, but I suspect the succeeding chapters are also well-written.

Legends

Belphera has the seeds of a really good story here, but it's not very developed. There are four chapters describing a world with an interesting backstory (while Ranma was in China, world war broke out; Ranma was involved, and ended up (secretly) helping to save the world). Now he's coming to America to meet his mother and the Tendos. I don't know if the fic is still being worked on, sadly.

Ling

Fragments is about Ranma and his soul-mate (not Akane) getting together in a Romeo/Juliet situation. They managed to not die, but it's only 12 years later that the others in Nerima discover that crucial fact, and delayed confrontations occur... Ling has also written Catharsis in Four Parts, about a detective Ranma Saotome. Both are adult and dramatic without being dark or angsty.

Living Life Anew

Mitch wraps up most of the previous plot threads in this story, set in the summer between high school and college, and lays ground for future work. I don't know if any future work is actually planned though. Currently at 8 chapters.

Madam Hydra's Lair

You'll find Tiger Claw here. Basically, an unknown conspiracy decides to bring out the full potential of the neko-ken; the opening battle has several of Ranma's rivals transformed into giant cats, so that Ranma has to almost kill them to save his other friends/fiancees. Incomplete, and it hasn't been updated in a few years.

Maoniichuan

Dark, long story about Shampoo's sadistic sister coming in, and thoroughly screwing up Ranma's life by manipulating his neko-ken. She's not the only one to make mistakes; Akane discovers P-Chan's identity, and uses Ranma to get her revenge. Sadly, this mistake costs her, as well... Many deaths and ugly incidents; not a lot of loving, helpful relationships.

Mark Davis

'Original flavor' stories. I recommend Monkey Head Butting, about a brooch that causes people to switch bodies (although Nabiki really comes across as a non-nice person).

Messed Up

An amusing look at what would happen if Ranma's mind were transported to an alternate, nerdy Ranma, and how Ranma turns that Ranma's life around. The writing isn't particularly epic (in the sense that the author has a little too much self-referential humor, a few implausible scenes, a little too admiring of Ranma's attraction to women, but nothing extremely out of place); it's good-spirited,funny, and all-in-all a fun read. It is, however, incomplete; it is up to chapter 3b

MetroAnime

Good author, with a number of good Bets (Ranma falls in Spring of Drowned Captain America, Happi turns Nerima entirely female, Ranma turns into a sabre-toothed tiger, and more).[note: if I'm remembering correctly, he's one of the more fervent anti-Akane writers out there; I'll check again ]

Michael Fetter (Jehtek)

He has a number of fanfics that take different views of the Ranma characters than in the comics. In particular, Schools United is a horrific vision of the path satisfying honor may require Ranma to take; while A Bengal Tale and Kitten or Cat take another look at the Nekoken. A Juuban Incident is a nicedark Sailor Moon/Ranma crossover, where Ranma is stuck as a girl and betrayed by his/her situation and everyone around them (including the Sailors). It's not very true to the SM universe, though. Also, Into the Terror is an X-men/Ranma xover where Ranma isn't a Wolverine clone -- instead, he can learn special techniques just by seeing them; however, It is very incomplete and doesn't actually go anywhere.

Michael Noakes

Michael has written Choices, one of the better-written takes I've seen on a Ranma pregnancy situation. The set up is much the same as in most Ranma pregnancy stories; there's an entire subgenre. The situation is pretty ugly, but in a semi-realistic way; sadly only 5 of 6 parts are written. What really lifts it from the crowd, in my mind, is its look at Ranma's friendships and interactions with the school (i.e., the non-major characters).

You can also find Let the Curtain Fall, which only has 5 of its 10 chapters done, but shows definite promise. Here, when Akane and Ranma go visiting colleges, Akane becomes involved in dangerous magic.

Mirror, Mirror

Michael Ricketts wrote this funny piece about Ranma being divided across two bodies (as in, he controls both simultaneously). There are some other alterations, but that's the big one.

Misato Kitty

Truth and Love have Ranma go off to be manager of a girl's dormitory; unexpectedly, the residents are the Senshi. There's less Love Hina fusion than you'd expect; and it's very introspective about Ranma's relationships (especially the budding romance between him and Hotaru); 'Love' has a great beginning that annoyingly becomes a cliffhanger. ('Truth' is complete; 'Love' has only 11 chapters)

Mr. Thou

Mostly Kenshin fics. But Megumi's Wish has Megumi (from Ah, My Goddess!) acting as an RA at a dorm where Ranma is staying at. Although clearly inspired by Ranma's Apartment, this is itself a very nice fic. The buildup is appropriately slow, making it clear that these are more mature characters without making anyone noticeable OOC. Ranma's the only Neriman present; there's a backstory being revealed that he has only two fiancees left. This is currently only three chapters, though :(

Nabiki.com

This seems to be an archive with a number of Kyle Emmerson fics (and other authors, also, but Kyle's the one whose stories stood out the msot to me). This has his Spawn/Ranma crossovers, and For what you dream of, a multi-part Ranma continuation. However, this last is only 6 chapters, and incomplete.

Nightelf's Elysium

In the Sunrise Chronicles, Ranma leads the Amazons in vengeance against the Musk dynasty for Akane's death and her being locked into female form. It's not as memorable as some of the others, but I liked some of the scenes and ideas.

Iris describes a Ranma that was sent to the asylum after being stuck in her female form. She eventually recovers; oddly enough, with the help of Kuno. All in all, this is a pretty depressing story.

NorikoHirano

Angst-fics. Sorrow of the Trees has the Jusenkyo victims turn ageless, so the 4 (R,R,S,M) live apart from the rest of the world in a forest, waiting for the world to end or tragedy to end their existence; but then Ranma recognizes someone possibly Akane's reincarnation. Good Bye is a depressing fic written in "a traditional style of Japanese prose", about how one character deals with an earthquake that claims her family's lives. Rendevouz is a meeting between divorced Ranma and Akane.

On Wings of Black

Redaeth tales how Akane is a winged monster, who has inspired fear and loathing in Nerima (and has been kicked out of hte Tendo house). Ranma comes along and must choose between the two others, but ends up running into Akane anyway. Somehow he's not driven off by her demonic aura, so the inevitable interest is sparked. It's incomplete, but a pretty good read anyway.

One Morning in Spring

An aged Ranma must decide what to do after his wife has died. This is actually a very sweet story (and Ranma/Kodachi).

Parallel Lives

This is an adventure story set as crossover between Ranma and the Wheel of Time universe. It's got an interesting backstory which is slowly revealed as the story progresses, where Ukyo, Nabiki, and Akane were cursed with Water of Drowned Boy; to deal with a lust demon that had possessed Happosai, they were forced to go into the WoT world, where it turns out that Ranma's female form, and Akane's male form, can channel. They manage to take care of the demon after being trained, but when they return to their dimension, something happens, and only Akane's female form returns.

When they finally realize what happened (about a week later), they return to the WoT world to rescue Akane. However, there months have passed, and Akane (alone, not knowing if anybody knew what had happened to her, stuck as a male, and being set up as a false Dragon and being Lord to some dozens of people) has fallen in love with a female Aes Sedai trainee. (Basically, this is the Castaway situation). She's made a committment to the trainee that she won't break, and thus Ranma and Akane are no longer together.

Recognizing that they could be useful in the fight against the Dark One, they all stay in the WoT world; however, it turns out that Cologne and Happosai have their own connections to the WoT, so Shampoo ends up coming too (although they don't know it yet), Kodachi is a another Lanfear, and Nodoka and the fathers come to ensure that the Akane/Ranma marriage take place

All in all, an exciting, albeit incomplete, adventure romp that has some tragic potential but never allows the angst to overwhelm the fun. There are divergences from the WoT canon, but it seems mostly compatible with up to Crossroads of Twilight (although steadily diverging, as more Forsaken are dead, and the Nerima additions are affecting things).

Phoenix's Den

No commentary.

Phoenix's Den

There seem to be two Phoenix's den, with the same stories. I'm not sure if both sites are being updated, or,if not, which is the canonical one. Let me know if you have information.

This has a fun WofTime/Ranma 1/2 crossover (incomplete as of my last reading; has 3 chapters, where Ranma et al travel with the group to Baerlon, but no further. Good writing, but if finished would probably make the series very short (because the Ranma characters are fairly advanced in their story arc, and thus really powerful; the first book's obstacles are trivial for them).

Pilgrim (stickney@scican.net) http://www.fanfiction.net/u/294076/ Some very good stories, mostly complete spamfics or concept pieces. Honorable Enemy answers a question about what Ukyo would obsess on if Ranma were to pass on, Mermaid's Song is a spamfic about Ranma getting stuck in a famous mermaid story, River Wind is a somewhat depressing, but really really good Jusenkyo tale (Ranma characters only make cameos) about a person who gets cursed as a horse and runs away from the Springs.... And Two for the Price of One has Ranma engaged to Nabiki... pity that Nabiki and Akane share one body...
Prison Sex

Odd tale about Ranma getting sentenced to life imprisonment in America. Ranma falls in love with a man, who convinces him to take the fall for a murder... of course, prison is not the greatest place for a half man/half girl, as Ranma comes to find all too well...

Procrastination

This focuses on Yuka and Sayuri (Akane's friends). Nice and sweet

Production of Joy

Odd story about Akane and Ranma after marriage, and their adoption of Kodachi's daughter.

Proteus

Kenshin/Ranma and AMG/Ranma crossovers. Not bad; they're marred by a little too much Ranma focus, but very entertaining. Ghost of Tomorrow has Ranma gone back in time via the Nanban Mirror to the time of the Meiji restoration;

Psyckosama

Fun Ranma/SM crossovers, focusing on Ranma and the Outer Senshi. Awkward Consequences has Ranma and Hotaru get together (and due to circumstances end up engaged). It is up to chapter 10a, and I'm looking forward to more.

Purple-haired Destiny

2 chapters are done, but the author has stated that he doesn't think he'll be continuing it. (There are supposed to be teasers for chapter 3, but the links I've tried are broken). This has the hallmarks of a great story; Akane is incredibly violent, but there's an emotional bond between her and Ranma, so it's not a tremendous divergence. Shampoo gets kicked out of the Amazons, and starts becoming more of a friend to Ranma; Ukyo plots to get rid of the others and ends up driving a wedge between Ranma and Akane. When Nodoka appears to redeem the Saotome honor, Ryouga lies and manages to totally trash Saotome/Tendo pledge, and Nodoka thus forces Ranma to confront his pledge.

Quantum Destinies

In a parallel universe, Ranma is a genetically engineered child prodigy, whose honorable scientist father has taken Ranma on an extensive training regime throughout the Japanese Empire. He ends up developing a machine that enables him to access the skills and talents of his parallel analogues, and uses his new-found martial skills against other familiar analogues. Accidents occur, and others start coming into contact with the other dimensions...

Quixote

A cunning opponent weaves lies around Ranma, so that his determination and propensity for trouble is turned against him. I really like this view of a cunning Cologne; not evil, nor stupid. (But there's a fairly straightforward flaw in this, as the cooperation of all involved parties is not guaranteed; there's definite openings for a sequel)

Ranko Works

Helping Hands has Ranma granted a wish by a clueless Goddess trainee. He wishes to avoid a test in school; to grant this wish, the goddess moves him (and her) to a world of darkness, where all is familiar but twisted, and he must confront the Lord of Darkness -- Nabiki Tendo. If that doesn't give you the flavor of these stories (Ranma with strong comedy and crossover elements), nothing will. This also has Unexpected Results, which is another Ranma gets a love potion and becomes pregnant; it's well-written, and avoids a lot of the usual angst. (Oh, and Ranma may not keep the baby, which is somewhat unusual).

Ranma One/Half: For Honor and Love

Genma took Ranma to China, and died at Jusenkyo. 8 years later, after being taken in by the Amazons, Ranma is coming to Nerima to find his mother. Akane is living alone, bound by her honor to stay available to marry Ranma, should he ever show up (he's believed dead).

Reid Carson

Reid has written Elegy for a Golden Boy, which is Gosunguki's thinking over the life and times of Ranma Saotome, and how when Ranma left the magic left Nerima. There are a few others, but that's the best

Relentless

Very good but incomplete (13 chapters, feels about halfway done) story of Happosai attracting supernatural ire, and passing the buck on to Ranma. This story is notable for the technique development that Ranma goes through while on the run (and others, too; Akane, Ryouga, and Ukyo all advance their skills significantly)

Robert Barba

He's co-written parts of Duet of Pigtails (separately linked because the main body doesn't seem to be on his page; it's a very nice 8 completed of at least 9 (and probably more) chapters crossing Magic Knights Rayearth with Ranma. The best such crossover I've seen yet; it's set far enough in the future that everybody is definitely outgrown their immature teenage years. Oh, and they fight Nazis, which is always a plus). Also has written Sailor Moon AX, which I've read about half of; even though I haven't watched any Sailor Moon, I enjoyed it.

Romancing the Tendos

Dedicated to romance between Ranma and the Tendos, of course! A Deft Touch is a very touching romance between Nabiki and Ranma, set a year after Akane's death at the hand of Saffron. And if you go to the Movie Fusion Challenge page, you can read an almost-annoyingly sentimental Ranma/Field of Dreams fusion.

Ryan Erik

Some very nice stories, including the best 'next generation' story I've read so far (In Search of the South Star; as summary, an accident happens, so Ranma returns 20 years later and starts hanging with the kids. But much better than the whimsical way I'm describing it; this avoids a lot of the schmaltz, but still confronts some of the emotional aspects such a situation could give rise to). It's not finished yet; it's done up to chapter 3, part 3.

Shadow Chronicles

A number of stories; On a Clear Day You Can See Forever has Ranma in an alternate world, where the Sailor Senshi exist; Hotaru is a half-vampire, and other Senshi are similarly darkly altered.Cast a Long Shadow has an alternate Ranma save Akane's life during a fight between Ryouga and Ranma.

Shadow Lurker Productions

Ranma and Akane: A Love Story is a nice 'Ranma as Samurai' story. (Ranma is cursed earlier in life; leaves his father, trains on his own, trying to live up to the samurai ideal: poet, musician, fighter, willing to kill). He plays the mentor to Akane more than the hero, and the enemies are appropriate to the changed background. Very different flavor than the anime series. The other stories here are similar in trying to portray non-traditional characters as the heroes.

Shunsuke

A Rude Awakening is a very interesting psychological interpretation of the anime's events; also worth looking at is Hell is Borne of Three Women

Siaru's Fanfiction

Pool of Drowned Ranma is an amusing story of what happens when Ranma dies (and is brought back) in the Tendo's koi pond. Involve jusenkyo water, and hilarity ensues. In my Dreams is a short story making use of the Akaneichuan, after Akane and Ryouga make their way off together...

Sinom Bre

This is possibly another name for D.F. Roeder. Fame has Ranma transferred to a private school; apparently Nodoka's family is feelthy stinking rich. He's signed up as a girl, for some reason. Nice use of humor, while not letting it get in the way of the plot. Still too early to tell what direction the fic is going in, though (1 chapter done).

Chrysalides covers Nabiki, Akane, and Ranma as they each go through some fairly traumatic events (Ranma's sexuality is very screwed up; Akane and Nabiki have their belief in their safety shattered). What will become of them? (1 chapter done).

See also http://home.houston.rr.com/onnaranma/index.html for Heart's Healing (Ranma/Ryoko), and Accidental Goddess.

Soul of a Samurai

What if Kuno's suspicions of the sorceror Saotome were true?

Sound Hearts

Sailor Moon crossover; this seems to be setting up a Ranma/Hotaru matchup; the dialogue is a bit repetitive, but otherwise it's well-written. (Possibly real life dialogue is just as repetitive, but with less emotional showing). 5 parts are completed

Spanner's Fanfiction

Justice is dark story of, well, justice after Akane dies, murdered at her wedding. An Amazon's Vengeance studies how far Shampoo would go to get Ranma (would she lose her own identity?)

Steve Pardue

Steve Pardue has written a great (and depressing) story called The Death of Love, about how apathy devours Akane's life after Ranma dies in her arms... It's notable for her treatment of Happosai and the other Tendos. Then there's the Scream series; Ranma is kind to Skuld at the beach, so the young goddess decides to cure the cute redhead of that nasty curse that keeps turning her into a boy... :-0

Stuck

Jusenkyo forms eventually bcomes permanent. Some years after they found this out, Ranma comes to visit Akari and Ryoga, to give Ryoga a chance to move away...

T.H. Tiger

Fics associated with him are also attributed to Roger(?) Schell. He's written Tenchi and Ranma: Together Forever!? (more chapters available at tannim.anifics.com), and The Shikima Interface, an ugly but epic crossover between Ranma and La Blue Girl. (Yes, it's lemony with lots of kink... but it does a good job of weaving a story through some very painful times).

Tabyk's Corner

Some somewhat dark stories here; Ukyo's Daughter has Ukyo take in a small girl, whose mother turns out to be Ranma. But nobody has heard of Ranma in some years, since he was sold out to the Amazons...

Also here is A Child's Prayer, in which Nodoka finds Ranma after the Neko-ken training (when he's been hospitalized).

Targhan's World

The funny Divine Daughter has Skuld come to grant Ranma a wish. The course of events means that Skuld will be Ranma's adopted daughter for a while, as she tries to solve his problems. But somehow even divine magic seems to cause problems, as Ranma's curse transfers to Nabiki, he becomes engaged to Ranko, and still more! As of November 26,2002, this has a prologue and five parts, and seems to be getting actively updated.

Tenchi and Ranma, Together Forever!

This stands out in the Ranma/Tenchi x-overs. Ranma is stuck as a girl, and Genma decides to take advantage of that by engaging him/her to Tenchi. Ranma, of course, is opposed, but Genma tricks him into promising to cooperate. As do too many of Genma's schemes, though, this falls apart, and he splits. However, while Ranma is training so that he can go into the Musk for info on returning to his form, his own Juraian heritage ends up complicating his curse (and his life)...

Ten

Some hundreds of years ago, Ranma was cursed to become female, and an immortal dragon. It seems the Tendos are the other dragon family on Earth, and Ranma ended up tasked to try to protect them, until now, when Akane is near the metamorphosis. Ranma must protect her, and learn from her, while fighting off a super conspiracy that uses Ranma's own clones in an attempt to...

Very suspenseful, very well plotted. Plus some neat fan-art.

The Bitter End

Dark tale of spousal abuse. Perhaps the most cited/referred to Ranma fic ever (that I've seen, at least).

The Contest

Nodoka tests the four fiancees of Ranma to see if they'll give up that which is most important in their life for him. But why is she doing it... ? Short and sweet. (Although I wouldn't mind seeing it continued).

The Dark Side of Life

Ranma failed to unlock his curse when he fought Herb; he's now stuck as a girl and depressed. Unfortunately he went to a party alone, and fell in with the wrong crowd... This is a pretty dark story. A few things felt slightly contrived (Ranma was very naive regarding the drugs, was easily addicted), but on the whole, worthwhile story.

The Girl I Knew Before

Ranma fled his life in Nerima; eventually he discovers that it's getting harder for him to remain male. But then his parents die, Akane re-enters his life, and he discovers that his parents may have left him a cure... Pity that Akane is really trying to get the cure for her love, Ryouga.

The Long,Dark Night

Blade/Ranma crossover. Akane's been taken by a vampire. Ranma's out to avenge her death, but is she really dead? Ukyo and Konatsu are on their own mission against vampires; Ryouga is a loose cannon of vengeance, and Blade has shown up on the scene to help kill vampires.

The Sound of Screams

Excellent use of 2nd person. Ranma has to be the best. It's a shame that Akane became his rival...

The Youngest Tendo

Bitter beginning to the Ranma tale. Genma brings Ranma to the Tendos, but discovers Nodoka is ther e already. Not because she knew he was coming; because she had divorced him and married Soun.

There's no hot water.... Imagine that.

Here you'll find Heart's Healing (Ranma feels his father at Jusenkyo, meets up with Tofu and becomes a doctor, gets involved with Ryouko of Tenchi Muyo!), The Accidental Goddess (very funny story where Ranma becomes a new goddess ... of sex), and some one shots (the lemony A Tale of Ten Yen is particularly fun)

Thermopyle

A number of very good stories here (unfortunately most are incomplete). Young at Heart is a AMG!/Ranma crossover when Ranma and Urd are both turned young -- Ranma by the aging mushrooms, and Urd by a breakdown in Yggdrasil. Ranma believes Akane when she says there are none left, and sets out on his own... Also note Decisions - The First Choice, a LH crossover with Ranma's sister.

Thomas Schmidt

Here lies They Shall Be One Flesh, currently at 3 parts, describing a possible beginning where Ranma and Akane are married the very first day.It shows great promise at being depressing

Three Souls, One Heart

Somewhat lime-ish. Akane gets possessed, but it seems that she's already been possessed. She has to deal with the situation, part of which is having mentors giving her advice on what to do with Ranma

Thrythlind's Anime

Thrythlind has written Lost Innocence, which is a well-written story about what happened to Ranma by Kuno under the influence of passion ramen. Pretty dark; it is marred by a slightly confused plot (as in, one of the central scenes in the resolution broke my suspension of disbelief; the purpose of the investigation was at great odds with actual testimony).

Til I Wake your Ghost

Many years after Ranma and Akane were married, a familiar figure comes into Ukyo's shop. It's Ranma, and he's been kicked out by Akane; in many ways, he's been unhappy for years, and is turning into his father (metaphorically). As he talks, Ukyo realizes how she loves her husband...

To Know Pain

Ranma is mute and horribly scarred as the result of the Neko-ken. He's psychologically very damaged, adn the story seems fairly clear that it'll take a long time to heal him. (Seriously, I think this may have the most interesting psychological issues of any Ranma-fic I've read).

Tonbo's Fanfiction

Check out The Plan: Ranma is challenged by Nabiki to act as mature as a 7-year old. She discovers the problems involved in trying to improve Ranma's social skills, however. There's also the lemon Why don't you Try Me For Real Sometime.

Transpacific Fanfiction

Check out Pastpresent, an original-flavor telling of Genma's youth; funny and well-written. And it gives him some dignity. Did She Jump Or Was She Pushed? is an entertaining mystery, where Daisuke investigates Akane's apparent suicide; Kasumi's Guest has Kasumi entertaining an assassin come to kill Nabiki. Ghost Story has two of Ryouga's students (he's become a school teacher) investigate a red-headed ghost roaming Nerima...

Trials and Curses

Ranma is stuck as a girl (ran into the Musk; various things prove that the Musk are not as civilized as one might hope). Genma is eeevil. Oh, and there are Sailor Scouts, and Ranma has a sister...

Trooper's Ranma Crossover Wing

The stories seem decent, although so far I haven't come across any that really stand out. Notable in this selection is Carrot Glace's Rurouni Ranma (Ranma's time in China was spent as a warrior for the Chinese army; he was the Battosai, and ended up renouncing his killing ways). It has 10 parts, but is incomplete; apparently it has been discontinued.

KPJam's Prince of Time might also be worth a look; incomplete with only 5 chapters to date.

Troy Thomas

Atmospheric pieces. See White Clouds in the Blue Sky for a survivor Ranma, facing psychological problems.

Twoflower's Works

Some entertaining stories, including Ministry of Confusion, which is probably best described as Brazil meets Ranma. I like it becaues it shows a Ranma making a difference where he isn't super-powered, nor irresistible to all women.

Ukyou Kuonji

Well, that's how the author identifies hirself, at least. I like the idea for A Dying Wish (Ukyou discovers she has terminal cancer, and 'borrows' Ranma); Standing in the Way is a 'Nodoka decides Ranma is unmanly' fic; and Onion Tears is worth looking at,also.

Vincent Seifert

Taming the Wild Horse, and Centaur is a romantic getting-together of Ranma and Akane. A Man Among Women and its associated stories form an arc where Ranma gets everybody -- well, sorta, and it's actually a somewhat unhappy situation.

WFRose

WFROSE has some very innovative concepts, and writes fairly well. Unfortunately, he/she also doesn't spell-check his/her work, which makes it really annoying at times. Also, he/she is fairly anti-Akane, which gets noticeable sometimes

But stories to look at include Over the Clouds, where Ranma is an idiot savant martial artist (thus not a comfortable guest at the Tendos), The Seven Fiancees, where Ranma's old fiancees are hunting him down in America for some reason,Akane the Suicidal which is as the title implies, andAmerican McGee's Ranma, which is a short introduction to what looks like a dark take on things(Akane takes steroids, Ranma's body is giving out, so on).

WebDragon's fanfics

Saishu no Wakare is a very sad story about Ukyo after Ranma and Akane wed. Most of the fics tug at the emotions, like Building Bridges (set in Thy Outward Part continuity). There's also Nullifier 1/2, which is comedy with some lemon, if I'm remembering correctly.

Wrath of Gods

a crossover between AMG! and Ranma. Basically, Ranma and Akane begin having dreams of their past life; as demons working against the gods. Of course, Ranma is also beginning to remember Belldandy... it's a good story. As of November 26, 2002, a prologue and eight parts can be found. Sadly, it looks like Corwin has pulled his repository of fanfics offline for an undisclosed reason, and no archive I've found has the 9th or 10th chapter; please let me know if you find one!

X-Change students

An incomplete story crossing Ranma with the X-men universe. This has some of the better crossover rules: the Nerima crew are not mutants, just focused martial artists. There are a few elements I'm unsure of (somehow Nabiki has strong telepathic shields; while possible, the story doesn't go into how she got them), but for the most part it's an enjoyable read where Nerimans get invited to America on the chance that some are mutants. Nothing too exciting, but enjoyable.

http://www.oocities.org/Tokyo/Bay/9295/ranma.htm

Secrets is nice little romantic lead with almost no combat or action; it's a character-based story of how Ranma has assumed a female identity, no longer loves Akane, and is instead in love with a new (female) character. There are some other stories, most of which focus on character and some form of lesbian attraction (no lemon/lime that I've noticed or remember).

http://www.iamnota.net/fanfics/

This has Comes the Cold Dragon in 15 parts! (more than I've found elsewhere). In that story, Ranma discovers that his ki manipulation has achieved a new level. (Hint: it involves being a cold-blooded reptile :-). It also has Divided I Stand in 7 chapters, which is about Ranma getting permanently split against the backdrop of a natural disaster in Nerima. Both seem to be incomplete, but here's hoping they're not EOLed.
