Memories Lost (Part B) by Michael Keens/ Exodus “I’m afraid there were indeed side effects, Mew. I sense the girl has total amnesia, even I can’t find her memories, and her personality and emotions shall most certainly change from the experience too. Did you get her bag from the Safari Zone?” “Mew!” “Good, as long as she has her loyal Pokémon friends, she will rise from this tragedy and lead a normal life. Mew, it was right of us to bring her to the Viridian City outposts, that way, any low level Pokémon she runs into can be scared off by the Rhyhorn. I wish there was more I could do for her but no one must know you and I exist... Mew, she wakes, let us be off!” They formed their bubbles and blasted back into the sky. The girl woke up, and stretched, before groaning from the pain. It was scary, here she was, in a place she didn’t know, with nothing to remember, it was as if she were a newborn child, except she knew how to talk and learn and understand, only that was about it, no personal memories what-so- ever. “Who am I?... Where am I?... Why am I here?” Looking around she saw a medium sized brown bag, she looked at the name tag. “Abby... Abby? Is that... my name?... It, must be...” She looked inside to learn more about who she was, but all there was were three strangely shaped balls, similar to the one strapped to her belt, a potion, some antidote and a picture. Abby stared at it long and hard but didn’t feel anything for it, it was only when she noticed her reflection in the nearby stream that things came together. Her dark violet clothes and her red hair matched one of the people in the picture, except she had a scar across one of her eyes, while the girl in the picture didn’t. It was clear that it was her in the picture, with two other people. “Could they be... my parents?” There was nothing else to go by since there was no writing on the back. She put the things back in, then stared long and hard at the red and white ball. It had a label saying ‘Sparky’ on it, she thought for a moment, but somehow knew that ‘Abby’ had more chance of being her name. Something deep down told her to throw it, but she couldn’t even do that, she didn’t have the previous knowledge of being a great pitcher, instead she dropped it rather pathetically, and a yellow striped mouse thing with a jagged tail appeared. It turned to her and smiled. “Pi Pika!” “Pi Pika... What?” “Pikachu!” said the mouse worried. “Who, what are you?...” She searched long and hard, but there were no memories of this creature that stood before her. “Is your name... Sparky?” “Pika!” answered the mouse, still concerned. “What... are you?...” “Pi-ka-chu.” he said slowly. “A... Pikachu... Right...” Not knowing what else to do, the Pikachu tapped the buttons on the other two balls, and seeing a new one, it tapped that as well. “Vulpix!” “Clefairy!” “Rhyyy!” The three Pokémon shuddered at the new ally, it wasn’t like Abigail to catch a Pokémon like this. The Rhyhorn stared at Abby and remembering the purple cat with immense power and its mission it had to take, it simply sat down and watched the girl. “Pika! Pika! Pikapi, Chu Chu Pika Chu...” explained the Pikachu to the others. Abby was reading the other balls, “Foxfire... Pixie... And you have no name...” “Rhyyy...” “You have strange names based on your appearances and... powers... Sparky for a lightning-like mouse, Foxfire for a flaming red fox and Pixie for a strange pink fairy. You look very strong, and very defensive, perhaps you should be called Armour...” A strange name but the girl and it seemed okay with it. “Why do you stay with me? Do you know me? Who I am?” Unfortunately Abby couldn’t even grasp the language of these things, but all they knew was she wanted to be a Pokémon Trainer, to train cute small Pokémon so they could protect her and be her friends. That was all. The Pokémon were too far away from home and even if they were close, they barely knew what Abigail’s home was like, because they weren’t that familiar with its location and surroundings. The Pikachu could only think to try and activate the Pokédex: “I am Pokédex #41250, belonging to Ben Turner, if lost or broken I cannot be replaced.” Too bad, Sparky remembered, Abigail had never received an official Pokédex, this wouldn’t help her discover who she was, he tapped some more buttons. “Pokémon are strange creatures that live in our world, they have unique powers and a trainer’s goal is to catch and train Pokémon, and to go around the world beating the Gym Leaders so they can be qualified to battle in the Pokémon League. Pokémon grow to be loyal to their trainers and can form friendships with their trainers and other people they have known for a long time.” “So... That’s why you stay with me... I... trained you before I lost my memory...” “Vulpix!” “But what now? Do this Pokémon Training thing?... I want to know who I am...” “Fairy...” There was nothing they could do, her Pokémon could only guide her to the Pokémon Centre, they could do nothing to help their trainer. Nurse Joy took in her Pokémon and Abby sat watching the happy people, their lives were fine, they knew who they were and who loved them, how would she find those two people that were so close to her in the photo? She looked at a spiky black haired male trainer with his happy Horsea, “Me and you Horsea, you’re my best friend and we’re gonna go catch lots more friends and compete in the Kanto League. Right?” “Horssseeeaa!” “Is that... what I should do?... Catch more of these... ‘Pokémon’ and compete in this Kanto League?... It appears that’s what I did before I lost my memories, but how will that help me discover who I am or who cares for me?” She turned away and stared at the TV. “And here was the winner of the last Kanto League tournament and his speech...” said a lady with black hair wearing a pink suit and holding a microphone. “I’d like to thank my friends, my family and of course my Pokémon for this glorious victory.” said a spiky haired male trainer happily. He held up a trophy, “This trophy is comin’ home Momma!” The news reporter came back, “And even now, new and old Pokémon Trainers alike are training their Pokémon for the next Kanto League tournament which begins in less than 12 months. And onto other news...” Abby thought, “If I could get to that winner’s podium, I could tell the world about my condition and perhaps my parents... could be watching and come find me.” She had reached a definite decision. ‘Bing Bing Bing Bong Bing!’ sounded the hospital alert telling Abby that her Pokémon were refreshed. She soon released all four. “Pika?” “Vul.” “Fairy.” “Rhy...” “Hello you four, I know you may have served whoever I used to be, but I ask that you help me when I need you most, I wish to compete and win the Pokémon League so I can broadcast my plea for my parents to find me. Will you help me?” “Pika! Pika!” “Vul!” “Fairy!” “Rhy...” It didn’t sound too convincing but it had a mission to protect her. “I... thank you...” The Pikachu leaped into her arms, whoever she was probably would have given him a big hug, but she didn’t quite feel that way. “Pika...” “I’m sorry, I guess I’m not like who I used to be, but I’m sure we can try to start anew...” “Pi-Ka!” agreed Sparky. With that, Abby had a mission to accomplish, and so she would win the Kanto League, it was her only hope to rediscover herself...
