--- CHAD THE CHOSEN’S Victory in Pewter City Gym (by Michael Keens/ Exodus) --- Me and Bert had arrived in Pewter City, the City of Stone. Well, we had to rest on the mountain that overlooked the city but first thing in the morning we were there. “Chad, just for once, I’d like to take the Gym Challenge first. You’ve gone ahead on the first two, come on, be a pal.” pleaded Bert. “Sure Bert, go ahead.” “Thanks...” I waited for ten minutes with my Pokémon making sure they were in good shape. That arcade in Aquamarine Town helped a little, Entwine was good against Rock, or something, and Ragecage was good against... Something or other... I wish I had a better memory, my Pokémon were still the best. The doors opened and Bert walked out gloomy. “I lost...” Dang, if he lost, would I do any better? Bert was a formidable trainer. “So the Rock and Ground Trainer beat you?...” I said. An angry expression shot through him. “Rock... and Ground Trainer?! You knew?! And you didn’t tell me?! I could have saved myself a lot of embarrassment!” “Embarrassment?” “Rock and Ground beats Electric and Fire, the only two Pokémon I have!” “Sorry, I thought you knew too.” “I’ll be outside the Pokémon Centre!...” Bert sure looked bummed, but still, I didn’t have to be, I waltzed right inside confidently. “So another challenger, I do hope you have some Pokémon that can put up a fight.” “Sure do.” I answered. The Gym Leader had squinty eyes and spiky hair, he wore shabby clothing and sat cross-legged on an altar. “I am Flint, the Pewter City Gym Leader, we’ll have a two-on-two battle, okay?” “Sure.” “Go Rhyhorn!” “I CHOOSE RAGECAGE!” “Rhhhyyy!!!” “Mankey!” “A type advantage... Not one of the well known ones but you are still another typical trainer.” muttered Flint. “It is?” I asked, then covered up, “I mean, yeah, it is.” I nearly forgot about what I’d learned in Aquamarine. Fighting Pokémon smashed through Rock-types. “Rhyhorn, Horn Drill.” “I never researched that one...” “Key!” Ragecage decided to dodge it using its initiative. “The Horn Drill will finish off your so-called advantageous Pokémon.” “RAGECAGE! LOW KICK!” It swept under the horn, and through type advantage, knocked even this big lug off his feet. It wasn’t through yet. “Rhyhorn, Take Down!” “RAGECAGE! KARATE CHOP!” “Mankey!” He leapt right at the charging beast and smacked him hard in the face. “Stomp.” called out Flint. Ragecage was buried under the Rhyhorn’s weight. The dust cleared and Ragecage was doing the best he could to hold up the Rhyhorn, he looked at me as if questioning me of what he should do next. “Um, FOCUS ENERGY!” Ragecage closed his eyes, he appeared to glow red with rage. “SUBMISSION!” “Man-KEY!” He pushed the Rhyhorn away, who tried to stomp down again right away but Ragecage was spinning himself into the attack and punched the Rhyhorn clear over Flint, it crashed hard into the wall and fell to the floor. "That had to hurt." I commented. “Think you’re powerful? Try this on for size.” “Graveler!” “Mankey...” He was tired from the Submission attack, I recalled him and brought out Entwine. “Gela!” “Graveler, use Rock Throw!” “VINE WHIP, ENTWINE!” “Gela!” The rocks came down fast but Entwine whipped them away then smacked the Graveler hard. “Yeah! You go Boy!” “Gela!” he squealed excitedly. “Graveler! Rock Slide!” I hadn’t heard of that one either, the Graveler flung itself forward dragging across the floor and bringing up a pile of rocks in the process, it stopped itself and the rocks flew forward and buried Entwine. “Entwine! Where are you?!” “Graveler, use Earthquake to bury it further.” said Flint darkly. “Graveler!” It stomped the floor and the rocks collapsed further. The Graveler stood proud, then energy was being drawn from it, and taken inside the heap. The Graveler looked angry and jumped forward. “Good Mega Drain, Entwine, NOW QUICKLY, HYPER BEAM UPWARDS!” “Ge-llllaaaaaaa!!!” The beam exploded the debris and scraped up the Graveler’s chest, it crashed down, while Entwine was tired. It was my sister that taught Hyper Beam to little Entwine, she figured he’d need it to beat bigger Pokémon, and I was glad she did. “Entwine?” “Gela... Gela...” he panted. “Hyper Beam is so strong, it takes the user a while to recover, unfortunately for you its a Normal-type attack, less effective against the Rock-type Pokémon. Graveler, Dig under the ground and catch it from underneath.” explained Flint before commanding his Pokémon. It dived through, and a distant rumbling could be heard. “ENTWINE, TRY YOUR GROWTH!” “Hah, forget it, that Hyper Beam stops it from using more attacks until its recharged. You made a fatal error, guy. It should be about time...” The rumbling grew louder. “ENTWINE! JUST RUN AWAY!” “You can’t run, nor hide when Graveler uses Dig.” commented Flint confidently. The noise was critical now. “Gelllaaa!!!” screamed Entwine extending its vines. “It can’t use an attack!” shouted Flint. Entwine flung its vines to the ground and raised itself into the air, that Pokémon sure was creative, just like sis. The Graveler flew out aimed at Entwine even as high as he was. “VINE WHIP!” It was spectacular, the vines withdrew then Entwine put all his strength into throwing the vines down at the Graveler, they hit it so hard, it flew back down into its hole and came out the entry point, totally dazed. “Yeah!” I shouted. “Gela!” cheered Entwine, “Gelagelagelagela-laaaaa!!!” he squealed realising he was in the air, I ran forward and caught him, he was pretty tuckered out, but I was proud of him. “I congratulate you, guy.” “My name is Chad.” I said to him extending my hand to meet his in order to shake. “That Tangela is quite a rare find, its much more powerful than the ones I’ve seen.” “Gela!” “The Mankey too, I bet you could even use them against equal strength types rather than ones with disadvantages.” “Could I have my badge now?” I asked impatiently. “Of course. Here is the Boulder Badge.” “Yes! CHAD THE CHOSEN HAS GOT A BOULDER BADGE!” I shouted holding up the grey crystal. “Chad... the Chosen?...” questioned Flint. Upon returning, I showed off my badge to Bert but it led to our parting, he felt he was being rushed into getting badges and wanted to look for new Pokémon. It would have been a good finish to our journey together, if it wasn’t for him taking all the money. But still, I got a free lunch for saving the Museum from evil Rockets, well, some kid helped out a little, and I managed to borrow a little cash from home. Now it was time to go towards Mount Moon and maybe catch a well known Pokémon for the team. Looks like CHAD THE CHOSEN, was going solo... --- Abby's First Gym Battle Emily's First Gym Battle Back to the Side Stories Back to the Pokézone
